This is an excellent circuit to hone your surface mount soldering skills. I learned a great deal from this, soldering in 0402 and 0603 parts, the latter of which will fit in 0402 locations.

Hi Ray: I just saw your question: pin 3 isn't used in this specific circuit. It's used to connect an optional resistor to reduce the gain of one of the comparators. The datasheet suggests that this helps stability. I haven't tried it, but it's probably worth doing once the basic circuit is working. One thing that I found quite important was to connect the 100uF input capacitor right across pins 7 (GND) and 12 (VCC). I also as a matter of habit have a 1uF ceramic across the rails to help bypass noise.

I have been working to set up this circuit in LT Spice, quite successfully, mostly..., and everything appears to be fine with the schematic, except I can't find Pin 3, feedback, in the schematic? Is there an error in the published schematic, or is the feedback pin not in actual use in this circuit?

Ray O.
