sorry, I accidentally hit Enter before finishing to write. Several years ago I started to collect original Allen-Bradley carbon composition resistors mainly because I wanted to give my vacuum tube projects that vintage-style that I remember from my early years, some fifty years ago or so, but also because of the great emphasis found on advertising of their era about dependability of this particular brand of resistors. Do you remember the "to moon and back..." advert? Well, the disappointment was huge when I started using these resistors which, I want to point out, were all new when I bought them in various electronics markets at not exactly cheap prices. I had purchased various types of Allen-Bradley resistors, RCR (five colored bands, the last one yellow) and non-RCR, with various tolerances, 10% and 5%. The percentage of resistors that were completely out of tolerance, even those at 5%, was very large. For example, in blocks of twenty resistors I was only able to select two or three that were within tolerance. And I also did temperature tests, using only the heat from my fingers, and got large variations in the resistive value. What can I deduce from all this? Maybe the resistors (new at the time: NOS) that I bought were not stored properly? Or maybe they absorbed moisture in all the time passed from their fabrication to the present? For the time being I have put aside the Allen-Bradleys and, in the next restoration of an old (but not too old) oscilloscope I will use 0.5 Watt carbon film resistors (DIN0309) that I usually buy from Mouser or Digi-Key. Unfortunately neither of these two vendors has the few 1 Watt (DIN0414) and 2 Watt (DIN0516) carbon film resistors that are needed, and I will have to fall back on metal film resistors to obtain resistors of the same size.
