RE: Using wD-40 to prevent rust - In an earlier life, I was a gunsmith. I worked with a couple of other fellows running a repair and barrel making service. We did re-bluing of guns on a bi-weekly basis. When we first started, it was just two of us, and we used WD-40 by the gallon. After bluing, we used to spray the newly blued barrels down with the stuff, then wipe them down with news paper (unprinted news paper). We noticed that the paper always came away black. Well when our third joined us, he noticed our problem and had a good laugh on us. You see WD-40 removes Rust, well gun bluing is a controled rust that happens to be blue instead of red. So we worked so hard polishing and preparing the guns only to apply blue then remove over half of it when we were through. When we changed over to water displasing oil, the problem was solved, and our products came out with a much darker and more beautiful blue. That was when I stopped using WD-40 as my go to lube. It is a great solvent, but for rust prevention, I use BOSHIELD! It was designed by Boeing to protect their planes in high salt atmospheres such as the Pacific Coast. I use it on my RV all the time. It leaves a sort of dry wax finish on the steel and aluminum surfaces, which prevents rust and lubes much better then WD-40. It is more expensive but goes twice as far, and lasts much longer.
