Hello everyone! How do you measure high resistance values, such as 20M ohms and above? I have a standard multimeter that shows OL above 4M ohms—I don't know why that happens. How do you guys handle that? Thanks.

Hi Everyone! I'm an old Avionics Tech and Master Electrician wanting to refurbish my old vacuum tube NuTone 2401B. My Question: should I use an isolation transformer to bench power this puppy? I saw Mr. C's post on hazards using one with an O'scope?

Brian Slota

Hi Steve, you have been messaged and the files were sent some time ago. Use the DM function to personal message me. Check your Junk Mail or spam folder regarding your email, they may be trapped there.

Mr Carlson's Lab

Still trying to get the ultra probe project files. I joined Patreon, but gotten no answers or guideance to get files.

I just watched this and the youtube presentation regarding the BLuetooth install. I have a question about how to install the coax cables you mentioned for quieting down any hum or buzz. Is the shielding grounded on both ends of the coax or just one end. And if just one end, which end? Thanks for all your work, Mike

YES, please BC-348Q, many multiple parts! I have been waiting for it to return. You started and then it went in to the ether. I thought I forget to keep looking for it. How could it not get many views? I guess everybody has different interests.

I have a Racal RA17 to renovate and intend by starting with cleaning up the chassis. I remember in one of the You Tube videos you described techniques that you use. Wondered if these sort of tips could be collected as a 'Video' post on patreon at some point? Also is there anyway I could search You Tube to find that upload again?

John Turner

This list is awesome.. Thank you Mr. Carlson very much!!!!

Amplified Parts has several videos showing how they reproduce can capacitors using old OEM factory machines. Search "CE Manufacturing Can Capacitor Production (Part 1)" on youtube. Also watch the history of the transistor, there is a lot of cool documentaries about all manufacturing processes, but they are not titled easily to find. People are buying old manufacturing equipment and making chips in their garage now. Some people.

Not at all for the adhesive line heat shrink as the adhesive needs heat to melt. The adhesive liner is similar to hot melt glue. If you heat shrink soon after using the alcohol you will of course see it bubble out the ends as it evaporates at about 170F or so,

I've just watched video 184, "The Capacitor Replacement And Substitution Guide" and found it very interesting. So far as the construction of capacitors it is a mystery to me. I can understand the old wax types where there are metal foils rolled up with an insulator between but it's the ceramic, polyester, polycarbonate types etc. that I don't understand. I'm sure if Paul could make a video to discuss these types it could be very interesting.

I recently performed a search for the high-value gigohm resistors used in some of these projects (for example, the dual display capacitor leakage tester in videos 107 and 108). That project requires the equivalent of a 40 gigohm resistor for proper calibration. Searches on DigiKey, Mauser, and Newark all showed some at extremely high prices, or only available in batch quantities, or at high wattages. I then looked on AliExpress and found what I was looking for almost immediately; a lot of 10 high quality glass epoxy through-hole half watt resistors in ranges from 1 to 100 gigohms can be purchased for just a couple dollars.

George - Paul does not sell PCBs for his projects, nor does he provide Gerber files. The whole premise of his platform here is for us to learn how to make them ourselves. Towards that end he provides complete circuit diagrams, parts lists, and images of PCB boards that can be directly printed off on a laser printer. so we can make them ourselves using the toner transfer method. Note that he owns the copyrights on the printed circuit boards, and he takes immediate legal actions against anyone who publishes Gerbers of his boards or mass produces his boards for sale.

John Moorhead

Hello Paul, I have received no reply to my question regarding the availability of the PCB for the the capacitor leakage checker. I appreciate you are a very busy guy, but if you can tell me the price of the PCB I would be very grateful. Do you have a paypal account? Regards, George Mayo G4EUF.

Paul - another topic I have not seen discussed here that you might add to your list is thermistors. How they work, how to recognize them on a PC board, how to diagnose them, and how they can be used in circuits, for example to reduce the effects of initial surge currents when applying power to a device; the differences between NTC and PTC devices etc.

John Moorhead

I'm running Firefox on Windows10. I searched the list above directly from Edit > Find in Page (Ctrl F). This is the last item in the Edit drop-down menu.

Thank you Mr. C!

That's a great tip. I use 99% Iso for more things than I can count. So it doesn't have any effect on the adhesive?

Brad Shugart

He's done that in at least one video

robotwizard

Hello Paul. I watched your Ultra Probe video and have a suggestion on passing the coax through the grommet. Instead of messy oil try alcohol. It works great and evaporates when done. I use this all the time when I want to slide a tight fitting piece of heat shrink on a wire or cable. This is especially useful when you have a size of heat shrink that is adhesive lined and is a snug fit that won't go without some help. This tip was passed to me by a friend that has a wire and cable assembly business. I use it all the time. Thanks for your good work!

I believe video #28 is what you are looking for.

Paul, I brought an AM/FM radio to a guy here in Colorado who is not familiar with alignment for FM, just AM only...did you ever do a video on that? This is for a Zenith X334, with 7N07 chassis.

Steve Sybesma

Paul, did I see a portable tester on one of your videos that tests outside foil without an oscilloscope or was that a leakage tester without need for oscilloscope?

Steve Sybesma

What lesson was that on the tubes?

I know in one of Mr C's videos, he went into detail how he makes PCB's using heat transfer, soaking in etching and so on. Does anyone remember which video this was? Thanks.

Ronald Drew

Mr C, would you consider a video on am/fm alignment tips, tricks and advice? Thanks.

Mr. Carlson, in one of your video's you talked about your variac/current limiting supply. If you made a video of it I can't find it. If not, can you show how you did it? It will be much appreciated and may thanks. I enjoy your videos and the work you put in to them. Roger fowler

Roger Fowler

Mr. Carlson I would like to know what software you use to make your PCB layouts

James Wood

Hello. I enjoyed your recent treatment of Vacuum tubes. In less than an hour your explained principles that take hundreds of pages in electronic textbooks. Since many of us on here are Ham operators, could you please consider explaining high power transmitting tubes and maybe the old sweep tubes of the 80s. Also, could you consider a discussion of a linear amplifier. Thank You.

ROD MINKS

There is a dizzying amount of knowledge in these videos, glad to be a part of it thank you, Paul!

Jay Cronen

Thank you Mr. Carlson for saveing me $47 bucks on two cooling fans . You taught me how to repair them

Brian K Porter

Hi I know you like the Tek TX3 but have you ever used the dmm916 they can be bought for about $100 the Tx3 are hard to come by.

Gordon Rockafellow

Nice projects.

I have a question! Sony model STR-DH190 serial 8996011 Lost on this never worked on one before don’t know where to look other than has power in and fuse is good. I have two one had a broken mother board, I took the power transformer from the one with broken circuit board and put it in this other one but still nothing! Have you ever worked on one of these Sony stereo receivers? Thanks!

Billy Sharp

hi Mr Carlson Ive got project it call an/usm-338 oscilloscope did not get much with it the power cord is about it you had info on oscilloscope at one time

roy c minks jr

Actually he would have to use the Canadian electrical code.

Russ

Hi Mr. Carlson. I've enjoyed your videos for some time now and joined Patreon to actually try to build some of your projects. One project that you did on YouTube that I don't find here on your Patreon site is the Nixie Tube Programmable Frequency Display. Would you care to share the circuitry and boards that you used in that project? Thanks.

S Good

Hi, Mr. Carlson. I’m new to this platform and still trying to figure out what may be useful to me... I have piles of old circuit boards and there’s a transformer on every one of them, sometimes more than one. I have no idea, at this point, what these circuit boards came out of and usually, the transformers have no helpful markings. Is there any way, with very simple test equipment, to learn anything about a transformer and what it might be good for? Is that a video lesson that you might consider? Thanks!

JB

Mr. C - Just finished up watching the HQ120 video - yet another great one - but I was a bit disappointed to see that you skipped the SA set up for the IF alignment. I have a simple RIGOL SA/TG but a little anxious about sticking it in among those high voltages. Can you please just explain the proper connections to the SA/TG and whether you use any special HV DC blocks or other safety precautions for doing the stagger tuning of the IF? Thanks so much. Scott ka9p

Scott McDonald

I hope your electrician used the NFPA code book and used AWG 12 in your walls for outlets rather than the AWG 14 lighting cable. Anyway thanks for filling in the gaps in my 70s tech education where we were post- tubes and inductors and pre- FETs and IGFETS.

I'm a beginner with a basic question. I need a list of quality brands of components to choose from.

By the way a cup of coffee in the UK in somewhere like Starbucks etc is more than £2 per month , so your subscription is cheaper.

I seem to remember hearing of an approved list of components to use when replacing parts in an old radio (esp. capacitors). Anybody know where I might find one?

John B. Leonard, Jr.

Thanx John...for your sleuthing efforts.

David O. Hamilton

Hi Mr. Carlson, just want to say thanks for all the work you do for the community! Also wanted to ask about the list of videos on this post... It doesn't seem to have been updated in a while. I'm pretty sure there are at least two more videos since 105 that are not listed here. Cheers!

Fernando Alves

Gentlemen, befor I commit to a $300 Mouser order I would like to know for sure what parts I need for these projects:

kmpres

Rubycon, Panasonic, and Nichicon all make good capacitors

Jimmy Moore

HI Paul, Is it possible to invert the list of videos so that the latest is at the top. It might help those coming via an email saying a new topic is available only to find the topic is not at the top of the list as they expect.

Terry Southwood

Hi Paul, Do you have a list of preferred lytic capacitor manufacturers?

Tom Pratt

Sorry if this has been discussed before; I just joined Mr. C's Patreon. Several of the YouTube videos refer to replacing the line cord with reproduction cotton-covered cord such as was used back in the day, but I had been looking for a source for that and came up blank. Finally located this at Antique Electronic Supply (great source for other goodies like tubes and such). Listed as "brown 2 conductor 18 gauge, stranded power cord, similar to woven cloth covered cords in early AC radios. 105°C temperature rating, 600V." https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/wire-18-gauge-2-conductor-braided-power-cord

Hang in there Andrei, let us know how it turns out.

Hi John. I will, thanks for your input.

Mr Carlson's Lab

Hey Mr. C! Do you have or would you ever consider doing a quick video explaining JFETs and/or MOSFETs? Your videos are incredible. Thank you!! John STGCS, USN, retired.

John Tymick

Mr. Carlson, would you consider doing a overhaul video on the Marantz Stereo fm tuner Model 10 B? Thank you. Best regards. Dave Hall

Dave Hall

Since some of us out here still dabble in tube sets, and tube testers hard hard to come by, would you see any sense in having a build project for "a tube tester"?

Eric Klassen

I got an email about "Mr.C's Relay and Switch Cleaning Methods, Capacitor Tester Specs, A Special Tool, And More!" but where is the video?

Is it something to do with an earth rather than the secondarys ground?

Assasinofsilence .

Am i being dumb ? Where has Mr C’s super probe gone ?

Mike Fletcher

i am new but i have a question i want to buy an isolation transformer the one i am looking at says grounding pass through and bypass the isolation which means the grounding is not isolated am i on the right track.

Great Videos,As usual Paul does the best For some old fox like me it's a nice refreshing time of knowledge Learn some tricks of the trade forgotten on the old drawer .

Alvaro

I said "hello" an I pushed "Enter"... How silly... Anyway I am a new subscriber and I watched most if not all of your videos. Fantastic work! I actually started on the super probe. Arthritis, shaking hands and poor vision prevent me from trying the SMT technology, therefore I am doing the through hole version. I plan to use the tube from a 99cents skinny hair spray to encase the probe. Changing subjects now: In one or two videos I heard something about building a triode/tube matching device. I have been unable to find anything yet. Are you planning to realease something like that soon? Thank you for doing these videos. They are FANTASTIC!!!
