New Historically Authentic 11th Century Clothing Line

Want to take some time today and show you what we have in the works for the 1051 Patreon Early Access Test Release and eventually for Bannerlord as well.

We have made some changes lately in our team and now have an independent 3d modeller commissioning our unit clothing models. This will allow Tim to focus on modelling armor, shields, helms and buildings.

As part of the upcoming 1051 early access dev process our plan is to overhaul all of the clothing worn by the units in game to be even more historically authentic.

As part of this process I have spent quite a lot of time trying to figure out what the real 11th century tunics that we see in the contemporary art like the Bayeux Tapestry actually looked like and have finally settled on the Moselund tunic (Found in Denmark and dated to 1100).

According to the art this tunic was worn in two configurations, rucked over the belt to shorten the skirt and unrucked to let the skirt hang over the knees. In addition there are plain and rich variants with different collars and even a riding split for the upper classes that rely on horses.

To take this concept even further I believe that what seems to be gambeson's in the Bayeux Tapestry worn only by the leading figures is a padded version based on this tunic construction. My theory is that the epilikorion padded garment worn by the Byzantines and Muslims at this time was transmitted to the more northern parts of Europe via trade and travel and was seen by the ruling elites as a way to follow the latest trends from the influential Mediterranean regions.

So the final version of this tunic will be the rather extravagantly decorated epilikorion type padded tunic designed to be worn over chainmail and worn by the faction leaders and generals that you play as in game.
