My Cage "Classic" 06/05/2010

If you had a personal theme song that played every time you entered a room, what would it be and why? (feel free to write your own)

James Noury's answer got me thinking. What is the most depressing song you know? Back in the 60's they were kind of a sub-genre of pop music, Tell Laura I love Her, Patches, Leader of the Pack, Billy Don't Be A Hero and so many more. (In fact, I'm sure my mind has subconsciously blanked out most of them from my memory, thank the Cartoonists.) There was one song that I totally hated back in the 60's, The Happening by the Supremes. Partly because of the music itself, it started out with a kind of dynamic horn section, then degraded into a sort of upbeat circus music. This however contrasted sharply with the lyrics, which told about everything going wrong in the singer's life. They played it incessantly until it finally disappeared from the airwaves. Then a funny thing happened. To me, at least. I heard it one day after not having heard it for at least 30 years, and, because I remembered it mostly from radio play as I was getting ready to go to school in the morning, I was suddenly back in my parents' kitchen eating breakfast etc. (Well, you know, cuppa coffee and some toast. Maybe a Pop-Tart.) Since then, it has been my "time machine" . As long as I don't listen to it too much, it still has the power to send me back there. Still don't really like the song.

"Glad" by Traffic. Or, if I wanted a more sinister note, "Superstition", by either Stevie Wonder OR Jeff Beck.
