Cognitive Dissonance

There is some cognitive dissonance in my mind: years of experience working as an art director in a gamedev studio plus thousands hours of practice make me think that I should polish the artwork to a super realistic level.

Yet, I adore the expressive nature of painting, where the strokes convey mood, much like music — as a musician strikes the strings, keys, or drums, or even barely touches them. If an artwork is heavily rendered as a photography, it seems to lose this essence.

Perhaps this struggle is shaping my artstyle at this stage. Do any of you feel the same?

Personally, I feel like making art hyperrealistic can draw more attention to imperfections and make it less evocative. Sometimes simple is better.
