design scraps #1
Added 2024-01-09 02:29:27 +0000 UTCin the HORIZON MACHINE development discord we have a commonplace channel where we drop move or design ideas that don't belong in any projects we're currently working on but that we want to revisit. here's a few of my ideas from there and from the google doc i kept such ideas in before we made it:
- PBtA game where the 'main' social move has the trigger 'when you talk to someone and you're unarmed' (this is inspired by a scene from classic who, where the doctor points out that people will be more friendly and open to you if you mean them no harm -- would work best in a game with genuine danger, where being unarmed is a serious choice that can easily backfire)
- groverhaus RPG where you're all forum posters looking back on a ridiculous incident that happened on the boards a few years ago. you roll on a table for a starting detail and then take turns adding one more ridiculous detail in the register and tone of Old Internet Reminiscing: e.g. "oh, and do you REMEMBER that one fucking guy who..."
- mechanic based around picking out a random detail of the scene (ideally one someone else described) and 'putting a pin in something', making it an invocable resource for declaring future story details -- like, the equivalent of the camera lingering on a specific object. allows a satisfying system of linear payoff without having to actually plan anything or know where thigns are going ahead of time

I love pinning as a way to conceptualise and easily communicate that idea! I'd always found similar mechanics difficult to convey to inexperienced players in the past.
