My Maze Sections for Phase 3: Destiny Of Fate

Hi guys,

Above you'll see the progression of my mazes starting from a few simple lines on graph paper.  I've made my game "old school" style using quad ruled graph paper, a ruler, and colored ink pens.  I prefer Pilot's Precise V5 (5 mm) pens as they are the smoothest pens that I've tested.  And I've tested all kinds of pens since I got started making this game in the early 1980s.  Their 3mm pens feel scratchy across the page with lines that are too thin.  Their 7mm pens feel darn smooth on the page as well, but they lay down too much ink which can wick away into the paper's fibers.  When I was in college learning how to be a draftsmen I discovered these as the "poor man's" drafting pen for their similarity to more professional and highly expensive pens.

For this project it is important to understand these are 3D layered mazes as seen from a top down perspective.  I use red to signify dual-sided independent Tele-Portation Fields.  These send/receive objects, weapons fire, characters, etc (upon contact with the Tele-Portation Fields) to a randomly chosen red Tele-Portation Field elsewhere in the Fractal Maze.  This is not isolated to the Maze Section your character is navigating.  Where you end up is of course at the whim of your Game Master.  So be nice to them from time-to-time.

Other colors that I use are Green, Light Blue, Dark Blue, Purple, Pink, Black.  Green is used to represent a self-healing all purpose food gel and a Mutant/Monster generator all-in-one.  Black is used to draw the shapes of the pathways of each Maze type.  Black squiggly lines serve to remind myself where to add black shaded areas.  Black shaded areas are a solid mass used to help guide confused players/Game Masters in figuring out the intended pathway connections.  Most of the time I prefer not to use this as it seals off potential pathways I haven't drawn or makes it a little too easy to find solutions.

The remaining colors serve as color matching dual-sided independent Trans-Dimensional Fields or Links in this Fractal Multiverse.  Their function, any restrictions on use, potential cause of enhanced or mutagenic outcomes is entirely up to your Game Master.  The Tele-Portation and Trans-Dimensional Fields/Links may produce a glowing quality which can illuminate some portion of the Maze Section.  Your Game Master may want to have transparent passages which may serve to scare characters as well as to disorient them.  Mutants/Monsters may also be prone to glowing.  If the Game Master sets the environment to low to zero lighting then this is beneficial in knowing where your next encounter is even if the walls or floors of a passage are not transparent.

The overall shape was too big to draw on a single sheet of graph paper.  So I chose to break it up using letter-sized graph paper to create my Fractal Maze.  I never draw dead ends on purpose.  Though sometimes accidents do happen.   Below are links to the rest of these developmental shots.  Plus the article for the part that was published to Tabletop RPG Encounters website.

How I was envisioning the complexity of the fractal maze: 1st layer = Maze Blocks consisting of hundreds to thousands of smaller buildings known as Maze Sections. 2nd layer = Maze Section buildings can themselves house anywhere from 1 to hundreds of smaller mazes. 3rd layer = The unique individual mazes. All of these are encompassed by red teleportation fields that randomly send whomever and whatever that touch these fields to any other portion of red teleportation fields. This could get messy depending on the mood of your Game Master.
