2022-10-23 17:47:24 +0000 UTCDavid, 1 nuke doesn’t work as a deterrent because one weapon doesn’t assure “mutual destruction”. It may even destabilize a fragile balance of power by incentivizing an unstable power to act first. Depending on your trust of the US gov “nuclear umbrella”, there’s enough ballistic weapons of massive destruction to shield South Korea (or retaliate) from the North Korean threat. It takes about 30m for an ICBM to reach its destination from the continental US. I would guess it could be deployed faster from a Trident sub. I understand the psychological pressure to have independent control over one’s sovereign defense. Ultimately, this seems like a false choice. Let cooler heads prevail?
