Dress Rehersal: Bosnia 1908

Patrons,

This will first be available for Bismarck tier and above. Everyone else in a day or so.

Sorry for the delay, feels like its been a bit of a momentum killer taking 2 weeks. I ended up getting waylaid finally writing the introduction for the series!

I hope you enjoy the next part in this Road to WWI Documentary, this time looking at the Bosnian Crisis. This is the first episode where I find myself feeling a bit disgruntled with the lack of information included (not something I say often!). There are other aspects to the crisis not focused on here - Britain's backing of Russia and consequent alienation of Austria-Hungary, Germany's relationship with the Ottoman Empire, and Serbia's role. I think it makes for a more cohesive narrative to talk about Serbia's role in the Balkan Wars Chapter, likewise I think Germany's position makes more sense to include when I get round to talking about the Berlin to Baghdad.

Hopefully that makes sense, though it does mean this episode ends up feeling a bit less multi-faceted than the actual crisis was. For the purpose of storytelling I hope it works more successfully though.

Hi Francesco, thank you so much for the kind words. I am very sorry for my late response. Haha, I've been so wrapped up in this that I really don't know, I'll have a few polls out on Patreon once I've finished it for sure. I could go back to something like the Habsburg series, but that almost feels like a different era at this point. Think I'll definitely produce a few shorter videos first, more for my own sanity if anything!

Phenomenal content as usual. Two questions, if I might: 1) What do you intend to work on after finishing this documentary? 2) What music do you use for your videos? Imho they’re all fantastic choices and part of why I watch your videos (aside from the excellent research and deadpan British humour)

I agree, it’s clear neither man expected it to blow up into the international crisis it did, but I think Aehrenthal wanted to embarrass Izvolsky personally. Parts are hard to put a number on because I have a tendency to breakup/ combine sections even at this late stage (I.E. at the minute I’ve got separate chapters for Italo-Turkish and Balkan Wars, even though they feed into each other and the Italian section looks quite short). At the minute there’s about 7 remaining (Naval Arms Race, Second Morocco, Russian Resurgence, Balkan Wars, War Plans & Armaments, Last Chances 1912-1914, July Crisis) July Crisis is going to be interesting. Going mega in depth is probably a 2 hour video in itself, and frankly I don’t realistically think anyone wants to sit through that lol. I actually think it’s the least interesting part of the build up to WWI anyway, but that’s probably because I’ve heard the story so many times. So the script ive got at the minute is quite condensed, though hopefully not simplistic.

I've always thought Aehrenthal did Izvoltsky dirty here. It seems to me that he did go behind his back and deliberately announced the annexation early to screw Izvoltsky over. Either that or there was a genuine miscommunication between the 2 sides. Do you know how many parts of the series are left yet? And do you have any specific plans for the July Crisis itself?

Really impactful events that proceeded the war. Thanks for highlighting them, as always wonderful work.

Fantastic video, the music was eerily creepy, very appropriate for dress rehearsal of the war that ended the old world
