People have pointed out that Canute looked feminine in real life, but I think it's also to illustrate that he was NOT the preferred heir. (that is, the author could have designed him to be more masculine and no one would have batted an eye, but I think he's intentionally Doing Something here) It's not on accident that he looks the most feminine when giving the flashback about how he can't connect to his father and he's not allowed to cook anymore. We also see the murder of Ragnar, who was meant to come off as annoying until now. Too late we realize Ragnar is very likely the only source of acceptance in Canute world, and possibly the only reason he's not...well, like the rest of the men we see in the show. Canute, unfortunately, is not Viking King material, and this is the episode where Askeladd finds out a bit too late that the King picked the brother Harald over him for these reasons. Also, on this rewatch I noticed some similarities between the death of Thors and of Ragnar. They both take fatal wounds from a sneaky trap by Askeladd, then rather than activate Cornered Rat Mode, they make Askeladd promise on his honor to do right by his son (figure). Still gotta stew on what this could mean, though, so just pointing it out lol. At the very least it's an interesting contrast.

He is loosely based on the Norwagian folktale of ash-lad, which is not really history but still an inspiration. More importantly, he is said to be descended from a Roman general named Artorius, which is supposedly the bases of King Arthur. Nowadays this conjecture is mostly discredited by Arthurian scholars (to my knolwedge), but back in the mid 2000s, when that arc of Vinland Saga was being written the theory was more on the mainstream.

Thorkell the Tall really did side against the Danes. Don’t look too deeply into if you care about spoilers.

2025-01-27 07:46:29 +0000 UTCYou guys doubting the existence of a twink (Canute) among Vikings is cracking me up. Also, a sad ending of the episode indeed. As annoying as conehead was, he was Canute's only real father figure. It's also interesting how near his death Ragnar reached for his sword like a true Viking looking for Valhalla, abandoning in a way his Christian teachings
