WHAT SHOULD WE WATCH NEXT! State Yer Case Patrons!
Added 2024-02-07 22:58:04 +0000 UTC
Hope you're all well gang! We're back and we're looking for some guidance for the TOON TIER on what we need to watch!
Also, as it coincides with us wrapping we'll be doing
HAZBIN HOTEL
That'll be firing up in the next few days!
Very stoked to see what all the hubub is about!
But we have finished shooting FMAB and CowboyBeebop and we need some more shows!
So in the COMMENTS throw out your suggestions!
New or Old! We wanna see the conversation that they illicit and then from this post, we'll drop a new poll over the weekend and decide the next show we cover on our $5 TOON TIER!
Also, just because some does or doesn't win does not mean we won't cover it, we gotta take into consideration how long the show is or isn't etc. Same goes for shows that get voted highly, but this forum and the polls will give us some guidance on what people are saying and you being Patrons, you hold a lot of weight with us. So let us know!
Should we rock some Neon Genisis or The Boondocks?
Maybe take a gander of Vinland Saga or Gravity Falls?
Is there any show we're not considering?
LET US KNOW AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING A PART OF THIS WITH US!
xoxo,
The Watchers in the Bar

Stranger/Forest of Secrets is a k drama thriller about mainly corruption that is excellent across the board 16 epsiodes. Prison Playbook is also really funny and poignant. For anime I would recommend:
Mo Dao Zu Shi (Chinese anime, supernatural, mystery, war, politics) Haikyuu (99% realistic sports anime about volleyball. Really great writing and characters)
Mononoke (Short, supernatural mystery, unique art)
Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū (Beautiful storytelling, set in older time period)
Fruits Basket (Romance, supernatural, mental heath, family and friendships) Natsume Yuujinchou (Supernatural, slice of life, heartwarming)
Mob Pyscho 100 ( 10/10 anime)
Kanwar Taroo Raaje

Oh, a recommendation call! If you not tired of anime, there are some good ones.
Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch - I believe you will have fun with politics in this one, even if it is just edgy realpolitik. Kind of fanservicy.
Shinsekai yori - good unsettling vibes. Adapted from real novel no less, which both bad and good
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - unconfined human spirit
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica - Great story, but should be watched if there is basic understanding of magic girl genre. Without context still good
Ping Pong the Animation - one of the only sports anime I didn’t mind watching
Baccano - Cowboy Bebop vibes, but with mafia and some mystical stuff.
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou - just a very chill traveling through the end of times.
Dorohedoro - manga was great, didn’t get to anime yet.
Mugen no Ryvius - space saga, old. But I feel like it aged appropriately
Death parade - tearjerker, story cool too, even if unfinished.
NHK ni Youkoso! - Interesting story, remember being good. May not aged well though.
Honorable mentions:
Devilman: Crybaby - too much gore and some believe as a bad adaptation. I did like it though.
Shinseiki Evangelion - iconography is great, but I don’t care that much about the story. Don’t @ me.
Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku - the first isekai. I remember it being a little out there, but enjoyable.
Also films:
Koe no Katachi - tearjerker, just wanna see you laugh yourself out of this one)
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) - good old one.
Princess Mononoke - heard there were some talks about it during avatar (the blue one), would like to see.

X-Men '97 is coming up so...X-MEN THE ANIMATED SERIES BABY! Journey back to the good old days of the 90s. 5 seasons, 76 episodes of mutant goodness so you can go into X-MEN '97 as X-PERTS. Second choice: Gargoyles. 3rd: OG 90s Sailor Moon but il take saor moon crystal as a consolation prize. Crystal is like an abridged version of sailor moon so wont be as long or as grueling a chore to watch/edit. Just miss out on the charm of the 90s anime trope and "bad" dub. #DIC

2024-02-08 17:50:41 +0000 UTC
If you are going by popularity Vinland Saga could be good.
But I am also thinking of what could be good fit for the channel and I think you would really enjoy Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - season 1 is a bit slow, but similarly to Cowboy Bebop a lot of shows were influenced by it.
Monster is another good shout - its now fully on Netflix and is one of the classics and I would say is the most “Western” anime out there. It is decent enough that Guillermo del toro wanted to do an adaption for HBO but it never worked out

I freaking love Gravity Falls and would love for y'all to see it, but I feel like you would also need to have on the viewing rotation a serious animated show (like a Vinland Saga, Violet Evergarden, etc.) to have as a counterbalance for strong post-show discussions for the channel. Gravity Falls is fun and has mystery to it, but it is still a straight up Disney kids show. It's a good palate cleanser if you have something super deep and serious on the viewing roster.

If you guys want to get a variety of (anime) genres:
Vinland Saga is good for historical drama
Spy x Family is good heartwarming comedy (the Japanese cast does a great job with this series)
Frieren is good Fantasy (good character development and found family)
Apothecary Diaries is good historical mystery with little dash of drama and comedy (great female main character)
Demon Slayer is good supernatural action
Some more old school classics from Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2 - kinda unhinged genderbending comedy, and Inuyasha - time travel supernatural action romance)

The Venture Bros. What starts out as a parody of Johnny Quest evolves into an in depth look at a world of super science, spy flicks, GI Joe, heroes and villains and all the other stuff we all grew up with, but with all the sheen scrubbed off. What it looks like in a world where this is someone's nine to five. Obviously a comedy, but with genuine heart, thorough world building, and razor sharp continuity.
There's some early 2000s-isms in some of the earliest episodes, but overall the show is almost single handedly responsible for the state of serialized adult animation in the modern day. It is a work of love by the creators and it shows. It finally wrapped up after 20 years, seven seasons, and a movie last year. And no one talks about it.

I think all the Netflix dub cast is amazing. They have range. They can do the big loud yelling/screaming moments while still being convincing and not crossing over into goofy territory. A lot of dubs suck at this. They can also do the quiet emotional scenes very well. Nobody is miscast or annoying(besides that character who is supposed to be at times). It’s really something you appreciate when you watch other versions and a teenager like Toji sounds like a 50yr old man. 😂 They don’t overact either which is a problem I have sometimes with other versions. I will agree the sub is better than the OG dub tho.

Mob Psycho 100. would recommend Hunter X Hunter, but in a week by week format it's a LONG haul... but Mob Psycho has some of the craziest action and best comedy you'll ever seen in animation, and it's totally complete at a total of only 37 episodes.

2024-02-07 23:17:51 +0000 UTC
Honestly, I'd definitely recommend monster. It's a psychological mystery thriller that just oozes with the history of the place and period it's set in. Like the other person recommending it here in the comments, I think it's a genuine masterpiece. That being said, if that doesn't get enough traction I'd absolutely be interested in seeing something like Neon Genesis: Evangelion or Vinland Saga.
Cody Messer

I vote Neon Genesis Netflix dub. It’s the same one Normies reacted to. Has to be the Netflix one because there is the original dub which is absolutely atrocious. I shit on a lot of dubs because lots of times they are terrible or don’t get the spirit of the character. But I vouch for this dub the same way I vouched for Cowboy Bebop dub. Everyone is firing on all cylinders here and it’s fantastic.

Vinland saga or Gravity Falls would be amazing. Both are exactly your cups of tea. Vinland Saga has some of the best character writing in animation ever and is one of the most mature anime out there. One of my favorite protagonists ever, especially by the end of season 2. Gravity Falls is one of the funniest and most compelling kid shows ever made. It scratches that ATLA/Korra itch of surprisingly mature stories being told in a kid show. It also gets shockingly creepy and nails the emotional moments. You guys would love both shows for sure
