Rough cut: Microsoft Response Point

I think a few different people asked for this so I figured I might as well share it - this is the roughcut of the Microsoft Response Point video I mentioned in my last post. It's missing a ton of on screen graphics, but nothing that really hurts the narrative (you can fill it in with your imagination easily) and it's not like the narrative doesn't have bigger problems anyway.

This is an hour and 45 minutes long and is absolutely not part of the Cathode Ray Dude Meta. If I knew how to cut out 65% of this I would have done it already, and I'm not convinced that I won't eventually figure it out.

Rough cut: Microsoft Response Point

I cannot wait to see the final version. Honestly, if you added the missing graphics, etc., there is no reason why this cannot be on your channel. One perfectionist to another: this is good. Let the world see this!

Chicken

This was really dope!! And I especially liked the parts where the job experience shone through. It's cool to hear trench stories, from food service to tech. I'm usually more on the side of the programmer vs the user, but in a perfect world, the programmer would be given the tools and opportunity to change things so they make the user happy, regardless if he's wrong.

paul h

I swear I can watch you ramble on about anything for hours.

takeyourbestscott

Rough cut or not this was enjoyable to watch/listen to.

Xiohexia

Thanks for letting this see the light of day, even as a rough cut it was a thoroughly enjoyable watch!

I'm not a phone guy at all (though I keep running into PBX enthusiasts in the retro space and I have to start wondering if I need to get a PBX to be "truly retro") and never understood the appeal of doing PBXs but I understand it more now after watching this video. Thanks. I'll be in the biased minority of "honestly this is good as it is; just needs all the other inserts added in". I do have to wonder what makes something like this no longer viable to actually do; would the pharmacists in Kentucky just use cell phones as over-engineered walkie talkies now?

Pietro Gagliardi

BTW: This video gave a few people here a nice long watch-together with side conversations via mumble....

as you touched already the AVM Fritzboxes: The "Digitalisierungbox" of Deutsche Telekom (marketed to small businesses, small AVR, 2-4 'lines', 4 to 16 extensions) are still in this alley. manufactured under license by companies Zyxel and Bintec under the design rules of DT. But they have other severe problems. in most cases they have the agility of a Synology NAS with all possible Apps installed at once.... because they actually try to accomplish too much in a desktop PBX. But off course i do not ask for a video on those, since i doubt that anybody outside of Germany would be intersted in that.

adorfer

As a Phone Guy I really enjoyed this, even as a rough cut. You absolutely nailed why their design shortcoming suck soooo much for any actual use case besides the most basic office. Looking forward to the Final Cut.

Taylor Kokinos

As the weird one with the phone system hobby I would really love it if you are able to archive the hard disks and share them.

Hayden Neumeyer

Maybe a patron discord ?

Pierre

I personally like the longer format but ofcause I can't comment for the general YouTube audience and must admit I'm biased as I hate the shortshit that everyone is pushing these days. PABXs are exactly the kind of stuff that I wondered about growing up. Side note I am absolutely addicted to Little Guys... The video series not the people, I prefer those on the taller beefier side. 😂🤣

Pierre

I'll be sincere: I've enjoyed it a lot. Turns out watching a whole almost 2h video about PBX in general, and this quirky unit in particular is something your audience can receive quite well :) I'd say you shouldn't be afraid of learning towards the long side if the video requires so (maybe take the opportunity to add an intermission), but even if you decide to cut some footage I think you can end up with an insightful video.

Wish there was a Patreon chat! I can’t think of a better group to ask: did I imagine this or did cell phones once have a feature that would continuously redial someone endlessly until they picked up? Maybe I imagined it but I thought my Motorola circa 2008 did…anyway thanks for sharing this!!

Rom

the push and pull of "look at how much they got right! it's so simple and intuitive, even to someone who knows nothing about phones! also it's unusably bad for one godforsaken reason" makes for a really compelling narrative. I hope you can finish this one

ashastral

This video is brilliant. Probably the best way of framing it on youtube is as an unknown "Microsoft" failure, but actually a really impressive one. It's obviously a journey, but it might not be best to keep mentioning it / qualifying it as that at the beginning, as it could put people off before they get into it. I agree with others that it could be split up, but the really interesting bit is in the middle (which also takes the most time), so I don't think the hook / intro would be enough for the average youtube viewer to watch three parts.

Henry O'Keeffe

This was great! Feels like it could easily be a multipart series but I'm not afraid of a longer video. edit: multipart meaning, one where you introduce it, one where you go over the fatal flaws and one where you compare the solutions from different vendors

Erik Granlund

And what if you want more PBX videos if you've already gone through both of their channels?

Aaronjamt

Until then, if you need your PBX itch scratched, "Look ma no computer" and "Connections Museum" have great videos about telephony.

Snuguru Maestro

Even as a rough cut, I love all of this, I love all your work immensely so this is a lovely surprise to see. I could honestly listen to you talk about this stuff for hours on end so the length is no problem either.

AstralPhnx

Heartily enjoyed this! Thanks for letting us see it.

Mike Lee

it's a bit on the long side, but i have highly enjoyed watching it! I wish you also showed how the inside of the first unit looked like, I'd love to see how much of a PC this really is (altho that may be more in spirit of little guys? either way, would be cool)

sdomi

2.5x, more for ADHD reasons than anything else. I used to have trouble when people would send me videos longer than ~15 minutes because I just couldn't focus on them for long enough. Higher speeds takes more of my attention and doesn't let my mind wander

Dennis Henderson

Whoa, a Microsoft product I’ve never heard of?!

Michael Del Corso

I liked this quite a bit. As a software engineer, I hear that "running a startup inside a megacorp" line with disturbing regularity, and it's supposed to be a code phrase for moving fast and having impact, but as this proves out it's really a code phrase for half-assing an MVP and getting out of dodge immediately after the first check lands.

triggthediscovery

I won't lie, i waited for a minute waiting for the Cisco default wavefile, thinking it was a joke, before remembering that it probably wasn't there - other than that, i really liked the video

Manuel Tondelli

Thanks for releasing this rough cut. I've briefly played with Asterisk in the past, but I'm mostly a very low-level hardware guy. I love the videos the Connections Museum puts out.

Kerne

Okay the dead silence when you mentioned the Cisco hold music was gold 🥇

small corrections from an avid Fritzbox user: the manufacturer is just called AVM - the GmbH is like the english Ltd or Inc. Also they mainly make home WiFi routers/ modems with an integrated PBX (and many other features like DECT base station, smart home hub, VPN server,…). Many users never use the PBX part or just a very small portion of it like the answering machine or the call blocking feature. The main reason people buy them and and like them so much is that they combine all those features or otherwise competently different different devices into one neat little box with an intuitive GUI and very long software updates with new features. Last year for example they added Wireguard support for their 7 year old DSL router - the 7490. I don’t know any other router makers that do this.

In the theme of ✔️ Amogus, my only note is that when you mention Teams, you need to show Steamed Hams but the S is crossed out. Being serious, this feels salvageable to me. Maybe could do with a bit more setup of concepts for people less aware of the wonderful world of PBXes, and some tighter cutting of the first half of the demo. The climax rant of its flaws is just under an hour in, I felt my interest going away a bit until that point. Also, if I can self advertise for a second, I have a mirror of the Microsoft download center. Unfortunately I don't currently have much about Response Point there, other than a flyer. I've been meaning to pull in several thousand more deleted files from circa 2000 - 2019, but I have a goldmine of links for you from that unfinished archiving project. This comment is already long enough so I put them all here: https://gist.github.com/kirb/9deaefd0199a1323af0c96087d1f7565

We use Teams at my job. It's somewhere between slightly and moderately worse than average at every single thing it tries, except for remotely controlling other people's PCs, where it's the single worst implementation I've used.

Lily Finley

that Bobson Dugnutt reference though

clabretro

Now, I want a 2 hour video on general PBX or any other telecom stuff.

Adam C.

Hearing your brief comments of Teams phone scares me. We're switching to teams phones sometime in the future. Aaaaaaaa

Zen The Fox

thank you! i do have to ask though, since it's only been 55 minutes, did you watch at 1.5x lmao. won't be upset, just curious

Cathode Ray Dude

Gotta say, I loved it. I understand your frustrations with the video, but I'm thankful you released the full thing for us. Here's hoping you can get it to a state you and the internet at large will be happy with

Dennis Henderson

Looking forward to this one once I finish work later, always enjoy your work sir 👍

Ratcom

I can tell, this is one of your longer ones. I’m biased, but I think this is an awesome topic. Speaking of which, I have some unique firsthand experience with Teams. I’ll just say we bitch about it too.

doink

It's not necessarily canned, it just needs... a lot of work.

Cathode Ray Dude

While I’m bummed that you decided to can this, I’m glad you released the rough cut. I used to be a telco admin, and I worked with Avaya PBXs. The guy who ran it for years left, so I kinda just raw dogged it.
