Scrapped: Thrift Store Kit

There's a category of video I thought would be a lot more common when I set up my Patreon tiers, and that's "finished, perfectly watchable, but just not what I wanted, so it's going in the trash." As it's turned out however, when I'm not satisfied with a video, it's usually unwatchable crap. That is not the case with the one I finished a few days ago: It's watchable, I just don't like it, so I'm never going to release it.

Normally that would just mean I'm going to reshoot it and do better, but the trouble is, I'm not exactly sure how to do that. After I finished the video I uploaded it, watched it, and felt utterly underwhelmed - but then I spent three days trying to figure out how to do it better and I just can't come up with anything practical. All I know is that I think it's boring, tedious, way too long for what it is, and wanders in such a way that I think people will struggle to hold on to the thread.

I don't know that you'll enjoy watching this, but I did work hard on it, so I don't want to throw it away - and it's not, like, offensively bad, so maybe someone will enjoy it. I'm sure I'll do this right someday, but for the moment I'm shelving it in favor of another Quick Start video that I'm certain will be a lot easier and more enjoyable for me and you. In the mean time, if you'd just like to listen to me talk for an hour, this is certainly that.

I do have one polite request: I'm not looking for criticism on this one. Suffice to say I am already critical of essentially all of it, and will be starting completely from scratch when I reshoot, and it will be detrimental to hear more about what I got wrong.

If you have suggestions for some of the problems I bring up in the video however, feel free to share. In particular, I've already been offered some interesting solutions for the USB power supply, but there might still be something better out there (not USB-PD though; it's just not granular or convenient enough.) I also just don't really have a great multimeter solution, they're all so awkward.

Thank you all for watching, if you choose to. If not, I'll be back soon with Quick Start Gaiden Ep. 2!

I dunno, I liked it. That headphone jack adapter thing actually solved a problem for me and i ordered it before I even finished watching the video.

I thought this video was great! With a good title like "Electronics Thrifting Go Bag" I think it would have done well!

This was fun! Would love to hear more tips for thrifting electronics and stuff too. Been feeling inspired to venture to some stores around here more because of your videos.

All of these $5-$20 items can be found on AliExpress for $5 or less. I've found tons of useable adapters in the $1.79 category. So your total might be more like $20-$30 instead of $100. I actually have a really nice USB adapter kit with a case that includes 6" Type C cable with little adapters.
