I understand your point but that is still a queer experience. Not a furry one. I love the fandom is a safe place to experiment, not because furry is queer. Just that thereβs lot of queer people here so itβs safe. Also damn, can I have a word with your mother? Jeez

In many of the cases it's not the same, but there are the rare few who use their fursona to express their queer identity in a safe way and for them someone learning about their fursona for the first time can be a triggering experience. I can use myself as an example. When I commissioned H3x0r it my way of connecting with my feelings and trying to cope with my gender identity and sexuality after years of anti-LGBT sentiment from my fam and being forced to go to gay conversion therapy seminars as a teen. For me H3x0r was who I wanted to be irl but but couldn't because of all the anxiety for years of past trauma. Fast forward a bit to this past spring where my mother in law found out I was a furry (not by my choice). She was working on becoming a family theripest and ended up using me as a case study for her college capstone project discussing my queer identity with her classmates without my consent and sharing details of my relationship with my wife and at the time 2 additional poly partners. So while it's not the same it can be just as traumatic depending upon the circumstance. Just offering a differing perspective π«Ά
