BUBBLEGUN EXTRA: SPINAL TAP & WEAPONS REVIEWED

Come and join us for our usual chat about what we've been watching recently - including a little Alien: Earth rant from Paul.

They've become one of those nostalgia acts sadly.

Just listened to this - funnily enough, I had to do an ice breaker in a work meeting today where we all wrote down our favourite 80s movies. Obviously there were 101 different choices I could’ve gone with, but I chose Spinal Tap because it has such a special place in my heart. I never get tired of it, and of course it’s endlessly quotable. But I then said that because of that attachment, I’m *really* wary of the sequel. I saw them live when they toured in 2009, and it was loads of fun, but even then that tired energy was apparent. Fast forward another decade and a half and add in the film seemingly missing the point of them, like everyone seems to have felt, and I don’t think I can bring myself to watch it. Too much fucking perspective.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I like it - a lot - but I also have HUGE issues with it. I've never been so confused about a show before. It gets so much right, but it's also weirdly dumb...

I'm liking Alien: Earth less and less as it goes on. The flashback episode, showing what happened on the Maginot was just Alien fan service, like Romulus was. They'd even recreated the interior of the Nostromo in anally minute detail for reasons that escape me. The Nostromo was a mining vessel, but the Maginot is supposed to be a science vessel. Why would they look exactly the same?! If anything, it should've looked the same as the Prometheus. The most recent episode was so dumb. When Tootles pulled off that (weirdly flimsy) feeding hatch door, I genuinely groaned. Why are they allowing what are essentially children to be in positions of huge responsibility? OK, I get that Kirsh probably has an ulterior motive, but that doesn't explain every bad decision. From a writing point of view, it's a "get out of jail free" card. You can have characters making silly decisions for the sake of the plot and just explain away with "Oh, but they're just children". It's lazy. The show looks great and it has some great ideas, but the writing is terrible. While I'm on a rant... Where's the security in that lab? Where are the system safeguards and monitoring? It's housing probably the most valuable and most dangerous creatures known to humankind and they put them all in the same room with nobody around! Sigh... I'm still just about enjoying the show though, despite my issues with it.
