My review/reaction of HTHaze:: I just found this dude from his reaction to Kendrick's "Not Like Us" - which I loved. First couple reactions I really liked- and he helped me appreciate Taylor Swift - so he does somethings right. But his schtick wears thin after you've seen a few reactions. A one trick pony who thinks he's much more clever than he is. And his limited vocabulary when trying to decipher basic lyrics is embarrassing. Dude needs to listen to a little less music and read a few more books. The guy loves the sound of his voice. Armchair/failed producer. If you can't do - react. I have no doubt his act, which is admittedly charming at first, will sooner or later turn off the majority of his followers/subscribers and ultimately his new bride. In short, I'm unsubscribing but I did get my $5 worth before the act grew old. He comes across as pompous, unfunny and one dimensional. He can dance though. I will give him that.

Ok, hear me out on this. The Manuscript is about her entire life, career, and all of her relationships up to now. In “I Hate it Here”, she says ‘I’ll save all my romanticism for my inner life and I’ll get lost on purpose’. It feels to me, after telling us just how much our protesting and resisting to so many of her personal choices has very deeply affected her and hurt her so much so that she now ‘Hates it Here’-that she is done writing autobiographical songs (saving her romanticism only for her inner life), and will now proceed forward by writing about stories and scenarios that she has made up in her mind (since writing about what she knows personally has broken her will to share so deeply with us outwardly). At the end of The Manuscript, after taking the journey through it (the journey being the process of writing TTPD), she says “one last souvenir from my trip to your shores”, meaning our lives, out here, in our world, because she does really live in a kind of separate world from us. And then the last line is her closing The Manuscript, handing it to us to keep forever, saying “Now and then ‘I’ (in the first verse it was she) reread the manuscript, but the story isn’t mine anymore.” I think she’s letting us know that the era of her entire life up to now, is over. That the time has come for her to live her life the way that she wants to, in private, and without all of the “fake empathetic vipers that doth protest too much” being able to have any power or influence on her life ever again. She’s all grown up now. She has, what will very likely be, the man she has been waiting for all of her life. She’s ready to settle down and build a new life with Travis, because her pleas to change “The Prophecy” have finally been heard.

I think that the first half of the album was more at the very moment of when she was feeling angry/upset, so that could be why it’s more unhinged. Where the songs in the second half seemed like her reflecting on those feelings in a clearer headspace and getting ready to move on from it for good. so it’s more palatable.

But after a few listens they grow like Midnights. I like the first half more but to me as a fan all her albums have different sounds so I never compare…just like what I like. I think with every album Taylor Swift releases her fans get more defensive and frankly, it's scary. There's one review that came out that doesn't have a byline for the protection of the reviewer's safety. I've also seen Swifties call people unintelligent for not enjoying the album? There's a regular notion that non-Swifties just don't "get" her music and many people do get it, it's just not for them or they don't like it. And it's okay! Especially when it comes to the racism line, I feel like too many fans are discrediting how people of color feel about it. Sure there are some people that are okay with it in the context, but for others they felt it was inappropriate and their opinion is valid too! Idk. I might get lambasted for saying all of this, but I feel like we're in a weird place when it comes to the ability to criticize Swift's music.

They’re alienating on first listen, but I think Taylor’s real success as an artist is replay ability. Even my boyfriend is singing the songs now. So…. 🤷‍♀️ However, funny enough I think the title track is the weakest and that’s what throws off the album. It doesn’t provide the structure the albums needs. Do I love the album? Well, yes. Okay, but then it just comes down to personal opinion then, doesn't it? Because there's also those who don't find the lyric offensive... since it's not supposed to be? The album's whole theme is 'poetry' so it makes sense that she would refer to a famous time period of poets. She makes the brief mention of the struggles of that time - racism, womens rights, and then states that she'd hate it anyway, even without those issues. It's literally no deeper than that. She could have mentioned any past period and it still would have been problematic for any number of races or genders because unfortunately humanity sucks. It's not even blind support, it's just realising that it's clearly not meant the way some people have decided to take it. Anyone would think she said 'WITH the racism' and not 'without'.

The lyric "how the death rattle breathing silenced as the soul was leaving" broke my entire soul. death rattle is the uncontrollable, gurgling, wheezing sound that happens when people are near death. It happens in specific forms of death; very common in cancer, covid, flu, and the death rattle is a main sign of heroin overdose. I've lost a lot of friends to heroin unfortunately. I've heard the death rattle after finding a friend OD'd. That line absolutely tore my soul into a million pieces.

Maybe im too far fetched but maybe the 1st part of the album is her trying to describe the anxiety and the chaotic that went through her relationship and life, that’s why it’s hard to accept by the first listen. Then in the 2nd part is her realizing and accepting the reality and she just becomes resolute and ready to move on, that’s why it’s easier (?)

Troy has always prided himself as being a fan of solid production and artistry. None of which this album gave if you honestly look at it from an unbias point of view. I am a lover of music. While I agree that this album is not some of Taylor’s best work, in my opinion, the second half of the album is far superior and even if it doesn’t save the album it says a lot about the trust she gives her specific collaborators. Troy has every right to feel however he wants about an album even if he gets negative feedback. That’s never stopped him from voicing his opinions before (see his past Taylor reactions, specifically Lover). But it’s not just a Swiftie issue. Every single major artist’s fandom has those kinds of fans. It’s just something that you have to put up with when you’re on the internet, and you can either ignore the comments and go on about your life or let them affect you. And from what I can tell, Troy doesn’t allow it to affect him as much as some swifties would like to think.

I usually respect your opinion but the clear pandering to the swifties for a check is wild. White artist like Taylor Swift are allowed to release mediocre albums like this and when it's called out, people get attacked and then they suddenly have a change of heart. If you have to have notes from your discord breaking down every single reference or have to read a prologue to finally "get" an album, it's just not a good album. It should be able to stand on it's on as a body of work. She made an entire album that all sounded the same. Adele wrote and sang about her whole marriage ending and somehow every song still didn't sound the same. Amazing how that works. And no the 2nd half doesn't save this album. It's the same lackluster vocals and mediocre production and lyrics.

For me, my first listen was like that, wasn’t sure if I was vibing with everything. There were some standouts that were really done. My second listen, all of a sudden it was hitting more, I think once I understood where it was coming from, my appreciation of it grew.

SO the albatross poem-as much as I remember about it- involves some asshole sea captain who no one likes and he shoots down this albatross while the crew is at sea and for whatever reason that’s the last straw for the crew because the bird murder fully cursed them. So they tie the dead albatross to the captain, or I guess he’s called a mariner idk, and then if I remember correctly they tie him to the mast and a whirlpool comes and kills everyone EXCEPT him but also I only know about this poem from what my dad told me as a kid. TLDR: an albatross is a sign of good luck and innocence and if you kill that innocence you will be cursed and the albatross you killed will be what destroys you in the end. Love that song

I feel like the front album perfectly sets the scene and rips the stage curtain away that was hiding everything she was really going through during the tour/highest time of her career. The first half kinda plays into her delusions and tells us exactly what she was thinking and lets her anger out. The second half is the soft side of her being vulnerable about her true sadness of this time in her life. She’s not actually some Wild West fresh out the slammer baddie she she wanted to be with Matty after the boredom of Joe.

the manuscript is about atw10 and her feelings/thoughts on her relationship with jake as she re-recorded the song and shot the music video. the manuscript refers to the book in the video and how the story of it belongs to us now! she talks a lot about how we took what was once a really sad song for her and turned it into something new because of our love for it :')

also i just want to clear up that this album is pretty solidly 50/50 (in terms of the "heartbreak" songs) joe and matty, but i think all of the matty songs are also about joe in the sense that she processed the end of the relationship through her rebound with him, if that makes sense. but i would say most of fortnight, so long london, black dog, most of loml, how did it end, chloe or sam, i look in peoples windows and peter are about joe.
