I wasn’t following troy when this stream happened so I’m way late but my take on the song, “Javelin (to have and to hold)”, is the thoughts you have a caregiver to a loved one suffering from an illness, specifically one like cancer, and watching them become a shell of who they were and have to deal with all of that pain and intrusive thoughts make you think of ending their life so they don’t have to deal with the pain any longer. Same with the second verse, being understanding of if his lover deciding to jump from a cliff and end it because it’s better than chemo, pain, etc. They are difficult thoughts…to have, to hold. My father deals with chronic pain and has never found relief and it causes him so much turmoil and I’ve been on this side of the first verse and he is frequently the second verse. It’s a beautiful song and idk that’s just a listeners interpretation idk if sufjan has explained it differently or anything

2023-12-29 13:54:09 +0000 UTCIf/when you do get around to it I recommend these albums in this order: Michigan Seven Swans Illinois Age of Adz Carrie & Lowell Specifically I’d love for you to listen to “Casimir Pulaski Day” off of Illinois and then listen to “So You Are Tired” again… I feel like these songs have similar themes both musically and lyrically
