The JMSDF Soryu-class submarine is a diesel-electric attack submarine utilized by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). Launched in 2009, the Soryu class represents the latest generation of conventional submarines with several advanced features. It displaces approximately 4,200 tons submerged, with a length of 84 meters and a beam of 9.1 meters. The propulsion system is a key feature, combining diesel engines with air-independent propulsion (AIP), which uses Stirling engines to extend submerged endurance by reducing the need to surface for air. This enables the Soryu class to remain submerged for longer periods than traditional diesel-electric submarines.
The Soryu-class is designed for stealth and maneuverability, featuring a hydrodynamically optimized hull and anechoic tiles that minimize sonar detection. It is also equipped with state-of-the-art sonar and combat systems for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and intelligence gathering. Its primary armament includes six 533 mm torpedo tubes, capable of launching Type 89 torpedoes and Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The class can carry up to 30 torpedoes or a mix of torpedoes and missiles.
