Kirov Modernization Ship Brief (audio fixed)

Fixed the audio issue.

Updated for the Admiral Nakhimov modernization and new capabilities of the Peter Velikiy, the last of the Kirov-class. As of 2024, the modernized versions, notably Admiral Nakhimov and Pyotr Velikiy, feature extensive upgrades to their weaponry and electronics.

Missile Systems: The outdated P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles have been replaced with more advanced systems (P-800 and more) enhancing both land-attack and anti-ship capabilities.

Air Defense: The Kirovs are upgrading to the S-400 Fort-M system (naval version of the S-400), providing superior long-range air defense against aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles (no ballistic 'hard-kill' capability).

Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Paket-NK torpedo systems are integrated for both anti-submarine and torpedo defense. Modern sonar systems and ASW helicopters (such as the Ka-27) further enhance the ships' underwater threat detection and response.

Electronic Warfare: Upgraded electronic warfare suites, including Kant-DS systems, provide advanced capabilities in jamming enemy radars, disrupting communications, and defending against incoming missile threats.

Propulsion: The nuclear propulsion system has been overhauled to increase efficiency, providing the vessels with virtually unlimited operational range and prolonged endurance at sea.

Command and Control: Modernized command and control systems integrate radar, sonar, and weapons systems, enabling real-time data fusion and improved coordination with other naval assets.

These upgrades ensure the Kirov-class warships remain formidable in modern naval warfare, with enhanced offensive and defensive capabilities suited to 21st-century threats.

Google-maps just updated, and it shows Nakhimov with 10 UKSK Modules for 80 missiles, its not quite clear is Redut is installed or the newer Tor-style system will be but i guess this is a solrt of confirmation

Some confusion about what you report when you say "The Kirovs are upgrading to the S-400 Fort-M system (naval version of the S-400), providing superior long-range air defense against... ballistic missiles". This is confusing because the Ukrainians have been hitting S-400 systems with ATACMS almost with impunity. In fact the reporter, David Axe stated "Ironically, the S-400 was designed to have an anti-missile capability, but it obviously doesn’t work."

Say what you want about the soviets. They build some sexy warships.

You mentioned that four were built, but only two seem to be "active", one sailing other in refit. Did the others get turned into floating casinos for Chinese tourists?

Whilst they're very impressive vessels, I really feel that these ships are an example of putting all your eggs in one basket, similar to Yamato, Mushashi or Bismark. They're terrifyingly capable individually but at the end of the day they're a single target, any damage puts them in port being repaired. Similarly trying to effectively coordinate and utilise all the different weapons systems effectively must be a nightmare. I can't help thinking all the resources would have been better spent on multiple smalller vessels working together in a flotilla. I'm generally an advocate of vessels having a balanced mix of ASW, AAW and ASV capabilities (simply because you never know what you're going to come across and vessels often end up being deployed independently but this is really a huge investment in resources and it's difficult to see it successfully surviving against a carrier group...

Whenever you look at a kirov from a periscope "for example"... why do I think Aaron knows this more than theoretically....

Thomas Riley

yeah i know, but hey, whats stated, might not be whats final

I'll do an update when the Admiral Nakhimov is doing sea trials. I've read so many weapon configurations about the modernization load out, it's difficult to confirm anything until it's at sea.

Love the revisit to the brief Aaron! that being said, the 20 xGranit complex is actually being replaced by 10 x 8 3S14 UKSK VLS cells for a total 80 missiles. consisting of either Oniks, Kalibr, Otvet and tsircon. which actually makes it even more of a dangerous ship!

Great brief!

Was the Kirovs the reason the navy restored the Iowa class battleships during the final years of the Cold War? Also cool lecture love your submarine and ship briefs of navies from around the world.

Thanks Aaron. Your sound is usually perfect. Not sure what happened on this one. Glad it could be squared away. What cool ships the Kirovs are. I can understand why the Russians hung onto them and modernized them despite the gargantuan expense.
