XLUUVs are very useful. If you don't need it to be very stealthy (indiscretion), a big diesel-electric can work for months even! For stealthy work, the problem they have is stealthy mid-range/long range communication -- like any sub basically. They could be used to extend the range of other manned subs (food, fuel, oxygen). They could themselves be charged or fueled out at sea, underwater.
