Thank you for explaining this with professionalism. The idea of an object in the medium of water transmitting a shock so massive it registered as an earthquake. It really is an astonishing thought, reminds me of how terrible a real warshot would be if it came to that.

This story always puts a lump in my throat. And to think those remaining sailors thought they were going to be rescued. Horrifying. Great brief as always.

F. I'm afraid that even if Russian Navy accepted the NATO help, then they'd could only find dead bodies. Unless the help was offered, like, in an hour after the incident. I'm pretty sure that the help was offered after the knocking has already stopped. A lot of time was wasted in the beginning of all of this. The Russian leadership is fully responsible for that. But don't blame them for refusing the NATO's help, unless it was offered literally in the first hours since the accident - in that case, yeah, you can blame them for that.

I am surprised. I would hope they have better quality control.

In RAN submarines we always said rescue and escape systems were to keep wives and girlfriends happy. With the depth of water around Australia we knew we would die in an accident. Accordingly maintaining those systems was probably not given the priority it deserved. This may have been a Russian attitude too

The source of the story I heard is the documentary Kursk: A Submarine in Troubled Waters, it is rentable on Amazon Prime, but how you put it the documentary is probably a lot of miss information.

That did not happen. Who ever started that story literally, in the very literal sense, made that up. Also called lying. There are 3 different sources, Russia, U.K. and the United States. All three countries have live audio recordings of the event and from all three sides there are no weapons in the water.
