The F22 suffers from a different problem. Because that program took over 30 years to come to fruition it has roughly the CPU power of a 386. A $15 raspi or arudino has more processing power than an F22.

Follow-on to the F35 needs to be twin-engine. The single engine is a major source of the trouble with the F35. So much riding on a single unit, everything else has to work flawlessly as a result. Also limits power for all those new wiz-bang gizmos they like to throw in aircraft these days. F22 doesn't suffer any of these problems because it's twin-engined. The desire to make a "cut rate" F22 by making it single-engined backfired badly.
