Early & Ad Free: Flooding Our Boat (ON PURPOSE!) 💦 Building An Aluminum Catamaran Pt. 15

Ahoy amazing Delos Tribe! This week's episode is pretttttty dang interesting if you ask me. Many of you have been asking about how we will test to make sure there aren't leaks in any of the welds, and here is our answer! Our method here is to actually fill the inside of the hulls with water above the water line, and see if any leaks out. Sounds simple, but that's really all there is to it! We were actually really looking forward to this, not only just to see how solid our boat is, but also for the novelty of hooking up the hoses and splashing around on the inside 😂 You don't have many opportunities to get excited about water rushing inside your boat, so we decided to take full advantage! We hope you enjoy this week's episode and that you're having a fantastic Friday so far!

Big hugs from all of us!

Just watched, again 😊, an episode when you were heading back to Madagascar from the cape. I think about the beating Delos takes in these storms and very rough conditions and she holds up exceptionally. Do you have high confidence based upon research and real life examples that in those very extreme conditions the welds on Delos 2.0 will withstand the pressures and stresses? I guess I’m asking how strong is Delos 2.0 construction compared to the classic construction of Delos? What motivates the question is the water test came away A+ for no leaks but how will all those welds hold up against the sailing conditions? Asking not as a criticism but because we care about you guys ❤️ Please tell me, “ we’ll be fine” LOL

I don't remember any hints about what's coming up next (Part 16 and ??) But my visit to the doc today confirmed that my short-term recall is failing!

William Flower

Absolutely beautiful camera work guys. Those time lapse shots were dead-set amazing. Kudos to Kazza for an amazing job and to the Stradbroke boys for the artwork that is their welding.

Matt Cullen

Great work, I’ve done a lot of aluminum tank work. 3 psi is the good standard. Love it!!

Jeremy Kamel

Hey thanks Courtney. Kiril certainly is a master of his craft, but I have to hand it to Kazza for her amazing camera work and putting so much fore sight into the storyline. I hope we're looking at end of next year for sea trials. Still so much to do!

Sailing SV Delos

That's a huge complement, thanks so much Nancy. We really appreciate your kind words. Kazza doesn't really enjoy watching most boat work videos herself, so I think she tries to craft something that she would enjoy and it definitely comes through.

Sailing SV Delos

Yes, that's a good idea!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Gary, there are no gasoline fuel tanks in the boat. Only diesel! The only gasoline would be for the dinghy, which is stored outside.

Sailing SV Delos

Arrrrghhh Matey that's the idea!

Sailing SV Delos

He he Har någon lekt med ChatGPT?"

Sailing SV Delos

Oh no!

Sailing SV Delos

Hey thanks Mark, those are very kind words. It's probably because Kazza actually doesn't really like watching boat work episodes herself so she tries to make something she would enjoy. Cheers- Brian

Indeed, she is a work of art in our eyes.

There were actually two previous rounds of testing for leaks we didn't film, which is why we had no leaks on the final water filling test. First off there was a visual inspection looking for obvious defects, which were marked. Things where the weld over-penetrated and created a slight gap on the other side. Then we put soapy water on the welds and hit them with compressed air, and sure enough we'd get bubbles around the defects. Some you couldn't even see, but the water and air knew it was there. All were then marked and we redid these welds and tested again with the soap/water method. It was super simple but very through. That's why in the end when we did the final water test is was perfect, all the defects had already been found and fixed so that was just the final verification. Looking back we should have filmed everything....

Sailing SV Delos

Hey Mike, actually the hatch drains are plumbed right into the grey water system that drains out the stern. The idea is to keep the bilge super dry.

Sailing SV Delos

Kiril is such a master!

Sailing SV Delos

Yep, absolutely! The Nanni should arrive soon followed by the hybrid system. Then the real fun begins :)

Sailing SV Delos

Ha ha yeah that's pretty sweet!

Sailing SV Delos

Yep, exactly. There was actually two other tests we did that we didn't film for brevity. First off there was a visual inspection looking for obvious defects, which were marked. Then we put soapy water on the welds and hit them with compressed air, and sure enough we'd get bubbles around the defects. It was then marked and we redid these welds and tested again. It was super simple but very through. That's why in the end when we did the final water test is was perfect, all the defects had already been found and fixed so that was just the final verification.

I have to say that's really Kazza doing all that. I have no idea how she juggles everything... We'll leave most of the hull with a brushed aluminum look, however the hull will be covered with a type of material to both keep it cool and give us traction when wet.

Sailing SV Delos

Hey thanks we have a lot of fun working with those guys. They're a hoot!

Sailing SV Delos

Pretty sweet right?

Sailing SV Delos

Beautiful work by those Stradbroke boys.!

Barbara Whiteside

How exciting! And what I love most is watching the two of you work along side the crew!!

Myra Slepoy

Super interesting stuff! Awesome videography as usual. With all that’s going on it’s so impressive you also think through camera angles, etc. A question, probably asked or addressed previously. Will you paint the hull or leave it virgin aluminum?

Robert Palumbo

Super cool! While managing quality for a testing laboratory for many years, the main thing was to simulate the real-world application as much as possible. The vacuum of space, cosmic rays, changes in altitude and humidity in flight, centripetal and centrifugal forces, lightning, vibration, EM interference... we had to simulate it all. But YOU are not doing simulations... you are testing in the real world. So all the fancy procedures aren't needed. Looking forward to the shake down cruise!

Love the images of the water going up and the refractions - looks like lifts coming up! Found a good luck piece for your bowsprit on ebay: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/yNIAAOSwWrllJrGZ/s-l1600.webp

Michael Williams

She's really coming together. Soon all the welding will be over and you and Kazza can now start fitting the interior. Very exciting! I'm very much looking forward to the engine install. Have a great weekend!

Bill Dapp

Loved the audio at 13:26 when the camera was submerged. Nice effect! Amazing that with all those welds, not even a pinhole.

Ray Norman

Do the hatch drains go into the bilge? Not a single leak in the water test? Outstanding!!!! That type of testing you spoke of (x-ray etc.) is easily paid for ..... it it's the Space Shuttle ..... since D 2 is NOT going into space it seems a waste ..... unneeded if it doesn't leak eh? I once assisted my field survey crew on the layout of upper floors on a 4 story metal Baltimore College Library around 2013. As we did layout on the un-poured open metal 4th floor on a snowy and windy day ..... a beautiful Hispanic girl came up the 4 story's of Ladders to join us, loaded to the teeth with gear and boxs. I thought she was on the Hispanic crew building the building ..... she was doing (nuclear?) testing on the metal construction fab. I was in awe of her. The Boat if looking SWEET!!! Keep 'em flyin

Exciting to see how the boat is coming along. Yours is the only project channel I enjoy watching because you don’t show endless hours of people doing monotonous jobs! Thanks for taking us along on your boatbuilding adventure. PS I spent 4 years of my life building a boat, been there, done that.

Mark Gumprecht

Keep up the Art Deco! And about 20:06ish the cc does a terrible job auto translating recessed hatch into "racist patch" *dead*.

Emily

Omg 😲 😱 she looks so good.

William Brandon Kahler

Hej, hej, det är SV Delos fredag och det är dags att slå till PLAY! Hey, who wrote that last bit? : - ) Things are moving along quite nicely. We got welding, hatch fab, boat flooding. Hmmmm You said there were no leaks. But there WAS one leak! That was about Kurt being recognized from his being in SV Delos videos! Hahaha But was that a BIG leak or a small leak? I wonder, . . . Brian, your hatch work worked out very nice. I'd love to be there and help/observe. I'm good with mechanical things so could probably tackle many basic tasks. I'd love to learn how to weld aluminum - steel as well. But I'm far away from Brisbane, Australia so all I can do is enjoy the show! : - )

Scott C. Wise

Very nice, incredibly sharp bows, looks like an axe, you can slice through the ice in the northern latitudes, if you have to ram a pirate ship...it's going down!

FreeWilly

did anyone ever mention gasoline fuel tanks and sailboats don't mix? great welding job. you've got a great crew, I would buy THEM a beer!!!

gary m

watching for years, finally made it to number one. owned a repair shop where I tested fuel tanks not only with air and water but I would test with a vacuum pump and let it sit over night and check for vacuum drop.

gary m

This is so fricken cool! Never thought I would really get into this (as a land locked ♀️), but you guys make this sooooo interesting! The progress you make every week is crazy!💙💦

Nancy D

Super Cool video. I absolutely loved the edit! What an incredible beast of a boat you are creating!! Cheers mates! What is the estimated splash date?
