Early & Ad Free: The (DARK) Art of Bending our Hull Plates- Aluminum Catamaran Build Part 3

Hey heyyyy friends! Part 3 of the build is here, and we're just having so much fun sharing this experience with you. We're learning right along side you all as we dive head first into the art and science of building an aluminum boat. This week's episode covers a topic that quite a few of you were curious about which is how do we create those sexy rounded curves on the hull from flat plates of aluminum. And the answer is a bit of sorcery mixed with some incredible experience and know-how from Dan & the team. I might be a newbie in this department, but the good news is I will be getting hours upon hours upon hours of practice, so hopefully I'll be a pro in no time 😂

Sending lots of love and big hugs from Sweden!

Brian, Kazza, & Sierra 🥰

We use a press break to bend metal plates. It looks and functions kinda like a heavy duty, industrial sized guillotine. It's fast and simple but can't make the varying radiuses on a single plate like that wheel can. For bending very thick steel hull plates for large ships to varying radiuses on a single plate, I've seen ship fitters heat up the plate along specifically laid out chalk lines and then pour water along the line. That induces a bend in the plate. The process is repeated until the bends in the plate match the template that the computer printed out.

As the wheel is a lost art- what do other builders do to get the curved metal?

Stacy

Watched last night, our Friday evening must do. Very interesting episode. The way I'm wired I would find working that machine very tedious but necessary :) Exciting how the boat is coming together. We're grateful you can multitask building a boat and videography. I guess you've got a lot of practice sailing a boat and capturing great video. :)

Robert Palumbo

Ha ha sometimes it's hard to tell, even Google Translate fails :)

Sailing SV Delos

I can't take Kurt serious with the gloves, the jacket and then those shorts with boots on, hhaha.

Ryan Spangler

What did Dan say!???

Ryan Spangler

Well good luck keep the good work . It is really nice to see this progress amazing,

Filip Udovicic

Hey Filip! We will start outfitting the propulsion system in November, then the interior fitout starts early 2025. If we could splash and start doing sea trials by end of 2025 that would be a huge success for us.

Sailing SV Delos

We're having a lot of fun with the whole project, so much to learn and figure out :)

Sailing SV Delos

Wow Brian! I'd say you are right smack dab in the middle of your element there. What an amazing experience to work with such fine craftsmen, building your own dream craft. So happy for you all...

David Cooper

Hi guys big greetings from Croatia, how long until all is done, whole boat is it more then a year?

Filip Udovicic

nope, not steel. They bought an old garcia, aluminum hull and did a pretty major refit. It was sitting on the hard for 15 years or so. They put "lesser" aluminum alloy on instead of zincs. Says depending on the type of aluminum, it could be better and cheaper than zinc. Something to ponder, i suppose. have a g'day.

Erik Adler

Hmmm, I hadnt heard about that. Are they a steel hull though?

Sailing SV Delos

Estimates are in the range of 10,000 hours till splash, about 1/3 hull construction and 2/3 fit out. Right now we’re 6% ahead of schedule 💪

Sailing SV Delos

he he thanks, we’re having a lot of fun with the project and hope that’s coming through 👍

Sailing SV Delos

you guys (and editors!) are just brilliant. you make grinding metal look like fun and produce a captivating video about it. how? lol 🤯

Patricia

Why .... back in the Day we had heavy metal ......... but it was called SHRAPNEL then! (Old English WW II joke). Great "how to" in this episode. The cutter made an expensive mistake? It takes a computer to do that! Keep 'em Flyin

Bonne Mike

Awesome video

Lisa & Claude

How many man-hours have you estimated for this build? Do you have milestones set? Are you on schedule?

Jeff Ridenhour

you talked about zincs in the other video, have you heard about "aluminiums"? apparently it can work better than a zinc. who knew? That's what Juho of Alluring Arctic says anyway. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKnFuOMYTvo

Hey Renee, this seems to be a pretty popular question I should address in more detail but here is a comment I just posted today: It's way more competitive than you think. Here are some numbers, fully loaded displacement with fuel/water, etc. in pounds for comparison. Most manufacturers report a "light ship" weight but no one ever sails their boat like that so find the right number for loaded displacement. Delos 53 - 36,300 lb , Catana 50 OC 41,884 lb, HH 50 OC 37,479 lb, HH 50 Perf 35,200 lb, Outremer 51 31,085 lb. Keep in mind the other boats are a few feet shorter as well. If we can hit our weight target i think we'll be very happy with her. I have looked into Aurogel! Still doing research though.... A few cool options out there!

Sailing SV Delos

That Australian accent 😁 Must be a total different life for you 3. And what a difference to the previous sail life Delos 2.0 will be. Bring on more naval construction work 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Jeanne H. Mathieu

Just watching the latest YouTube episode. You’re selling me on aluminium over glass. Very impressing pros. How does the overall weight compare to a fibreglass boat of the same size? And have you looked into Aerogel for thin, lightweight insulation?

Renée

So the building is still going on in Brisbane then? I thought you has sailed out 🤦‍♂️

Alejandro Sosa

Thanks so the building is still going on im

Alejandro Sosa

yes absolutely 💯

Sailing SV Delos

On the way back to Australia you'll be stopping in Annapolis, MD, USA for the Sailboat Show in mid October, right? Can't forget that! : - )

Scott C. Wise

Indeed 👍😆

Sailing SV Delos

Hey sorry we missed you. Our visa was expiring so we went to Sweden to visit Karin’s family. We’ll be back soon to continue working!

Sailing SV Delos

Hi I’ve been following Delos four years. Best of all I was planning a trip to Brisbane Australia this August Thought well, if there they’re still building the catamaran, I’ll go and visit. Believe it or not the day I phone Marina to see if you’re there they tell me the you sailed the day before. Also that you were heading to Europe. If so, can you tell me which cities as in October I will be in the south coast of France. Best regards and happy sailings Alejandro

Alejandro Sosa

It's so metal!

Emily

The Sun's been up for a couple hours, very bright with no rain showers. It's late in August, it's not early in May. But it's also SV Delos Friday and time to hit PLAY! I think it's time to Bend it like Beckham, or one of the other guys you've got working there. : - )
