Sometimes I like to literally copy another artist’s work line for line. Controversial! But I only use it as a warm up, and I credit the og artist.
But why?! Well, drawing is just putting lines of one tone onto a large contrasting tone, rearranged in such a way that our brain connects the dots and says “oh that a face.” That’s all drawing is really. I’ve got my go-to lines that portray a face. This is how I’m used to drawing eyes, mouths, noses, shoot I gotta draw an ear? Let me use my “ear shorthand” and fill in that gap. But sometimes I get too comfortable with my shorthand and overuse when I should experiment. Step out of my comfort zone. But sometimes it can be hard to work that flex. One way to excerise that muscle is to copy, line for line, another artist’s work. How do THEY draw a nose? A mouth, eyes, that blasted ear? I learn new shorthand techniques. I incorporate them into my own style. I grooooooow!
It’s why I follow hundred of other artists. Just seeing “what are they doing over there?” It’s why I’ve got thousands of saved pics. I like how they drew a waist from this angle, lemme save it for when I need to do something similar.
Trying to get better at screen grabbing everyone’s name in addition to their work.
And that’s my Ted talk.
