Very well said!!!! I totally agree. The classic, quintessential BLs will always be super romanticized and designed for escapism. I just hope that there’s still a nice balance of reverence and respect for the lgbtq community that these stories are based off. Sometimes people get the wrong idea of what the reality is actually like for queer people because most of their exposure to our community is only from BLs, which can be frustrating sometimes as a gay man. I feel like even the most romanticized and idealistic shows should still get the basics of how gay sex actually works LOL or even the basics of what it’s like to come to terms with your sexuality. I just think that if there’s going to be a whole industry that profits off of portrayals of us, it should represent us properly. The rate that we get BLs that we can also classify as lgbtq/queer stories is unfortunately few and far between currently. But if we can at least get to a point where it’s more balanced where BL fans in general are educated and know the difference between romanticized/escapism vs reality, I’d be happy ahah.

BL Besties TV

tbh I doubt that what we separate into classic bl and lgbtq media will ever merge, bls are definitely starting to show some more realistic aspects of being queer but its defined by certain aspects that don't suit queer media. For me personally, just looking at thai bl, bls are not just stories that typically romanticise the queer experience but they have very similar styles of editing, how they (over)use sound effects, use slow motion in romantic scenes over letting moments linger and characters speak for themselves. When I use this word I don't mean it negatively, but you could kind of compare bl to a carricature. It's a unrealistic exaggeration of romance that at the same time often downplays the negative realities of being gay. Bls do include drama and conflict but seemingly they can only handle one at a time and they really fail when it comes to portraying intersectionality (e.g. the reality of being gay AND poor- which mlc succeeded at). I feel like the purpose of a bl is different from media that wants to show realistic lgbtq experiences, bls change as views in society progress and can showcase and include things they might not have before but it's still always in tone specific to bl, that doesn't really lend itself to a down to earth realistic portrayal. I think there will be more bls we classify as lgbtq shows as time goes on but there will still always be clichΓ© bls that strive for escapism not realism.
