We have real candles on our tree every year.
The thing is with that, you have to make sure that your tree isn’t starting to dry. So we only put up our tree on the 24th. And we only light real candles on the 24th and the 25th. After that it would become more risky.
My family’s been doing it for generations and we never had an issue. With the holders we have you can even let them burn down completely and it will not be a problem. They will just go out.

My tangential story -- I had a pet newt when I was a kid, but it only survived for about a month and then my mother had to explain death to me (a toddler).
Two decades later I found out: during that single month, there were actually like 7 or 8 newts. They kept dying and she kept hiding it and buying new ones.

That carol arrangement is in one of the carols for choirs books (green, I think?) - it's fairly popular for choirs
