Crimson High v0.44 - Dev Log #3

G'day!

Alright, dev log #3 here with some good news and some bad news.
Also a question (below the changelog) for your consideration. Toss a comment under this post if you want to let me know what you think about the matter.

------------------------------------------------------------

Let's get the bad news out of the way first:
The update isn't done yet.

And the good news?
Well, the update is pretty long and pretty awesome. Which is also the reason for why it's not done yet.

I've ramped up the quality of both writing and renders once more, resulting in arguably the best-looking content I've produced so far. But naturally, quality takes time, so this development has slowed down my rendering work. That, paired with a whooping 700+ renders, has me still working on the update from the time I get up until the time I eat dinner (and sometimes some more after that).
But.. we're getting there. Though evidently not around Halloween, unlike what I estimated in the last dev log. In hindsight, I shouldn't have given that estimate at all, but at the time it felt reasonable.

------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, this time, I'm not going to give an estimate, even though you may be here looking for one. Grossly underestimating the work required for this update once was enough. All I'll say is that it shouldn't take too much longer.

What I will do, though, is give you a rough idea of what the changelog will look like:
- 50,400 words (to put things into perspective: that's almost half the word count of Chapter 1)
- 724 renders
- 3-5 Space Hamsters
- New bio entries
- A new feature (if I can make it work in a reasonable fashion without spending too much time on it)
- Miscellaneous bug fixes

------------------------------------------------------------

Alright, considering the question I mentioned in the intro:

I've been thinking that releasing the update in two chunks might be sensible. I have a good chunk of content ready to go, but it's currently just sitting there, waiting for me to finish everything else. By releasing it now, I could get those of you who don't want to wait any longer their fix, and would also take some pressure off my own back, since I wouldn't have to feel as bad for making you wait anymore.
And those of you who prefer to play the whole thing in one chunk.. well, there's always the option to just wait until the whole thing is done, even though half of it is already accessible.
So..

Would you like me to release the update in two chunks? (One within the next few days, the other once it's ready)

------------------------------------------------------------

And that's pretty much it for this Dev Log again. As usual, chuck your comments/feedback into the comment section below, or onto the Discord. Also, if there's anything you want me to add to future Dev Logs, toss that in there, too. I feel like there's potential for growth here, but I honestly don't know what else I could add - so if you have any ideas for things that could be worthwhile additions, let me know.

Next post I'll make on here will most likely be the release schedule.

Until then, and with my utmost appreciation for all your support, my beloved patron, I bid you farewell.

Cheers!

Comments

Heh, congrats. I'll take this into consideration when making the decision, thanks, Diablo :)

Vertigo

No worries, even the split updates would each still be bigger than my usual updates, so you'd get a good chunk of new content either way. Though, naturally, you'd get an even bigger chunk with a big release. Thanks for your comment, I'll keep it in mind!

Vertigo

Thanks a lot, that's very reassuring! I'll keep this in mind when making the decision on Monday. :)

Vertigo

Thanks for your comment! Actually, the main reason for making an update this big was that there was an opportunity for it - not much beyond that. The update can easily be split into two (still oversized, as compared to the usual length) chunks without detriment to the content itself. I'll take it into consideration though, thanks!

Vertigo

A sticky post with a completion estimate, huh? That's actually a pretty interesting idea. I post that kinda information regularly on my Discord already, so it wouldn't be a big deal to just post it here as well. Thanks, mate (and Jestur lol)! Wallpapers or the like are a good idea as well. If I'm ever gonna be delayed again (due to illness or whatever) I'll make sure to do that. Thanks again! You've got all the good suggestions, it seems. :P And finally, thank you for your comment and kind words! I appreciate that kind of positive feedback and reinforcement a lot, and I'll take your concerns regarding the holidays into consideration as well! CHeers!

Vertigo

Thanks!

Vertigo

Thanks for your comment! Sound effects for sexy times, huh? I've seen people mention that before. I'll have to see how feasible that is, but I'll look into it in the new year :)

Vertigo

Ha! I'll take that into consideration when making the decision on Monday, thank you :P

Vertigo

Aw, thank you! I'm not worried about the flow of the update feeling weird if I were to split it, actually. I've checked yesterday; there's a pretty good spot for a split, roughly mid-update :)

Vertigo

Good to know, thank you!

Vertigo

My vote is for one chunk. While a release soon would be a fun reward for just finishing exams, I don't have the jitters just yet.

Darklordiablo

I prefer big releases, I would cry blood if can't get a good enough bump of new content

Leeric_skarsgard

I agree with the rest of the comments here. Big release is preferable, and it will give you time to polish, add and/or change something that you might have missed or decided it would fit better with the other part if it were changed, so feel free to finish the whole update and then release it. We are with you either way.

Prometheus

I’ll wait. One big release is ideal. You had a good reason for doing the update this way. Don’t alter it now. Can’t wait to play it, but I’m patient.

Kal

I believe I've said it before... and while I'll admit I was getting curious around Halloween, I also remember what I told you an update or two ago: I'm ok with "it's done when it's done" as long as you let us know you're still alive in the meantime, be that with a devlog, or (I'm stealing an idea from another dev - Jestur - for this) a sticky post with a **% complete estimate. I will wait months for good, quality progress... I play Eternum, Ripples, Goddess's Whim, and a few others that like big, high-quality updates... often with months in between. Honestly, if the quality is peak, the wait (and money) are worth it. I'll pass on another idea that may help assuage you from feeling pressured too much: maybe offer wallpapers... not custom renders or anything fancy... just a rendered still or two if you know the wait is gonna be a long one... desktop, phone screens... have fun with it. Cute stuff, or NSFW, I doubt anyone would complain either way. Just a thought. As for my vote this go around? '...In for a penny...' as they say- I'm ok to wait for the whole meal. In the meantime, keep us in the loop, and keep having fun with this! Jobs aren't fun when they feel like jobs... let it flow, take the breaks, and keep on truckin'! Thank you so much for the update, Vertigo... I appreciate all the hard work you've been putting in! Cheers! ** I feel the need to add something: If one chunk can be comfortably completed before the holidays, awesome... if, however, releasing one big chunk would endanger your time with family and friends during the holiday season, then by all means, break it up. As long as it has no effect on your holidays, I'm fine with whatever you decide is best... I trust in your judgement in what's best for you for the sake of the continued quality (and successful eventual completion) of this wonderful tale. and again: Cheers!

Padyshar

I say one big awesome update!

Maxxy

I can wait for the full release no issues there, and as for change ideas, I'd love it if the ~Ahem~ sexy times had sound effects with the ability to turn them off for those that don't want them of course

Derper1979

I'm feeling Luffy, so I want One Piece. Jokes aside, it would be better to wait for the whole thing. A master patisserie never serves a multi layer cake one layer at a time. 😁

R'ja Norr

1 big ole update would be great for a replay and it would probably flow easier than if you were to break it into 2 parts. Other than really wanting something to have next week since I don't have a family to celebrate holidays with, I really don't mind the wait knowing you have a lot planned and you never fail to have a great update that is worth waiting for.

Xlyde

I say one chunk... mostly cause, like some others, I'm probably gonna start over from the start.
