Dev Log 22/09/2023 - Crimson High v0.28

Yo!
Gonna make this a quick one and not drone on for too long, cause I'm pooped and starving.

First of all, let me tell all of y'all that the update's coming along nicely and should be done within the next few days. No idea when exactly but my best estimation would be somewhere around Wednesday, maybe Thursday.
The update's back to the usual length of 13k words again, thanks to all sorts of bullshit that's been happening to me lately.

Which kinda brings me to my next topic: The time it took me to make the update and the (comparatively speaking) late dev log.
Some of you guys already know this, but lately shit keeps going wrong left and right and it's taking its toll on me.
Among a few other things I'm now in my fourth week without any hot water in my apartment. This (and the other stuff, which I'll spare you, cause this isn't supposed to be about me dumping my problems) has been distracting me a lot and made it hard to put in the necessary time and focus to really get to creating.
Hopefully things are going to calm down in a week or two (please gimme hot water back, I hate cold showers) and the next update period is going to be better again.

And since we're already talking about the next update period.. I'll be taking a week off after v0.28 is out for T2 patrons and begin work on v0.29 with the T1 release. It kinda sucks, cause things are getting interesting and I can't wait to write for v0.29, but the recent events have me crazy exhausted and I need the time to unwind and recharge. I know you guys understand this and won't say anything against it, but I still felt the need to at least let you know.

One small final thing that I probably should let you guys know about is that the next update doesn't have a cliffhanger. It's not a bug when it cuts off on a seemingly arbitrary point between scenes.
Why? Because I'm fed up with people telling me in all earnest that cliffhangers are bad practice and that they are annoying and shit like that - sometimes even leaving bad reviews/ratings (or detract from their overall rating) because of it.
In the long run (once v0.29 is out) it won't be noticeable anymore anyway, because it seamlessly transitions into the next scene, but at least for this one update I want people to see how weird it feels when there is no cliffhanger. Because cliffhangers are frickin' normal in writing and far from something that only I do.
(Oh, and this is not about those of you who joke about CH's cliffhangers or are annoyed about them in jest. I know that's a thing and I don't mind that at all - keep going, by all means.)

Anyway, looks like my plan of making this a quick one didn't quite succeed and there's a bit of a novel for you to read through. Mea culpa.

Next time you're gonna hear from me on here will be with the release schedule sometime in the next few days, save for any emergency posts I have to make because Patreon fucks up their billing or anything (which still is a thing, by the by, and is yet another worry of mine - but I digress).

Thank you guys so much for supporting me! I totes love you all to bits!

CHeers!

Comments

4 weeks with no end in sight, yeah. Update's almost done, though. :) That really is peak internet. Generally I'm fine tuning these comments out, too, but it was just one too much lately. :P Thanks for your comment!

Vertigo

I've once have to take shower when my house didn't have hot water... If you've been in that situtation for 4 weeks I wouldn't even blame you for taking double the time for update. >,> People going apeshit over cliffhangers is peak Internet tho.

Renhi

Heh, yeah. They are cliffhangers for a month, usually. It's really pointless to get upset about them. I certainly hope that v0.28's end will prove my point to some degree at least, yeah. Thanks for your comment! :)

Vertigo

You're right, of course. If someone doesn't like what I'm doing, they can buzz off. No one's forcing them to play CH. I hope.. :P Thanks for your kind words!

Vertigo

Thanks a lot for the vote of confidence! :)

Vertigo

There is no real alternative to having an update/episode/whatever end in a cliffhanger. You'll see in v0.28 how weird it feels when it's just a clean cut between scenes.

Vertigo

Ahh, so nice! Thank you! Very kind of you to say. :)

Vertigo

Thank you! I'm confident it will. :)

Vertigo

I'd say, when it comes to cliffhangers, yours are ok. Since they are only cliffhangers until the next update. As in: When I played through from the beginning, I didn't realize they were there. What you have planned for this update sounds much worse. Guess the people, who complain in earnest, are gonna realize that soon.

macslate

Honestly the cliff hangers get me more excited for the next update. They help keep the excitement there for me and always ready for the new update. Haters just gonna hate, probably something you dont like hearing but if they dont like it they can just stop playing

Megiddo

Oh you are hardly the only one that ends an update on a cliffhanger. I can think of several Devs/authors that I follow that do it. And while I admit that I find it annoying at times, I'm not one of those people who will leave a bad rating because of it. Please don't let those people who do leave ya down. At the end of the day its about the story, and yours is great. Just keep doin you.

Arctic Wolf

cliffhangers are fine, when done properly and sparingly but some games use them at the end of every episode unnecessarily

Corathor

Hey, i know it can be tough, but hang in there. Honestly, the cliffhangers made me a patron myself. They are neccesery and a form of art. Keeps us yearning for more. And the way you do it. Brilliant. Everything you've been doing is pure gold. Keep up the good work.

Nurnen

I hate the cliffhangers but see them as necessary, and I like freaking out after lol, hope everything goes okay with your water and stuff starts getting better

jvshero

Heh, that's how it's supposed to go :P

Vertigo

I never minded the cliffhangers, i found them amusing to see where you would end it. Only to be like "WtF ended there??" Them laugh to myself going, that cheeky little.....lol

Ryan Thornton

Thank you, Stuart! I'm sure they will. :) I know, cliffhangers can be awful if you have to wait forever until it continues. I'm not even denying that. They still are a great storytelling tool that I almost consider a necessity in any form of episodic media, which some people just don't want to accept. :P Oh, and congratulations to your wedding!

Vertigo

I often complain about Cliffhangers but only because the wait is usually terrrrrible. Haha. In all seriousness though, I don't mind cliffhangers that much as long as the next update after a cliffhanger isn't months away haha. As for your personal issues, I hope things improve for you soon. <3
