Similar to the imaginary beings we know as Carbuncles, these cute little multi-colored flying squirrel-like creatures are full of magical prowess. When tamed, they make a good easily summonable companion.
The color of the gem on their forehead represents their main aspect.
Carbuncles are always a staple in Final Fantasy but it's always not where they came from. They are mythical creatures coming from the Book of Imaginary Creatures by Jorge Luis Borges with Margarita Guerrero.
"Legends say the Carbuncle has some sort of shining mirror or jewel on its forehead, reminiscent of the gemstone by that name.".
So, the Bunclain are simply just another version of a Carbuncle, as if they are depicted as flying squirrels instead.
They are all capable of magic and the aspect they have is represented by the colour of the gem found on their forehead. This, of course, can be changed if you make the Bunclain prefer another aspect, but only Elemental Aspects, and not all of them either.
In the wild, they actually travel in groups and have scouts on the lookout and some strays as well. They are mainly found in the continent of Auril, the magic continent, but has since spread throughout all other regions due to their usefulness.
Once you tame them, they are willing to be summoned and de-summoned at will. Mostly via teleportation magic, or through a medium where they can rest and hang out.
Just remember to feed them, of course.
