This episode and episode 9 are probably the most compelling episodes for me. I think you've got the right idea for the show, where it's just flawed individuals being forced to interact and work with people they ultimately wouldn't normally interact with. Ultimately the different characters are the main reason to watch the show.
I think when some of the more mysterious/confusing characters like Maki and Nico get more inner dialogue is when the show is at it's best because every character finally starts to make sense. Sadly I'd say episode 8 is probably where that is noticeable.
