To all Vault 66 personnel:

Construction is proceeding according to schedule, and is in fact slightly ahead due to the plethora of natural caves we’ve discovered easing the process of boring our way through the mountain. The first and second levels are nearly complete, but many more are to be needed to house our projected population. Furniture is due to arrive for Level 1 in the near future, so good news! You won’t have to be sleeping on cots for too much longer.

I’ve heard some complaints about the attitudes of the men from Dunwich Borers, and I have to say I’m deeply disappointed in all of you. My good friend on the board of directors for the company was kind enough to provide Vault-Tec with a hefty discount for their services, and this is how we repay him?

I won’t hear another word of the miners being “creepy” or “off-putting.” Just let them do their job, and you do yours.

To all Vault 66 personnel:

If you haven’t already heard, the men from Dunwich Borers recently unearthed an enormous cavern under the Vault. While we were aware that Mount Ebott hosted extensive, unexplored cave systems, we were clearly underestimating the scope of it. It almost seems as though the mountain is hollow!

It’s quite exciting, and good for our overhead as well, since this will allow us to speed up construction considerably without need for continued excavation. I and the Vault Program director have already settled with the Dunwich company in a manner agreeable for all, and after they’ve finished the current tunnel we will proceed on a new, accelerated construction schedule.

Now, what this means for you researchers is that you may have to deal with increased foot traffic, but don’t let it bother you. I recommend you distract yourself with your own personal projects, as I am. By now most of you should have your workspaces more or less complete, and for the rest the repair ward can also function as an engineering lab.

To M. Haddock

Max, have you spoken with the Overseer recently? He’s been concerning me. He keeps asking me to scan the cavern again and again, but the results are always the same, a fat lot of nothing. He seems… happy? With that result? I don’t know.

I stepped in on one of his “experiments” yesterday. He was sitting in a circle of lit candles and intensely reading an old, crumbling book. I think our boss might be a loony.

To I. Thomasson

Do you have any idea where Ralph went? I saw him just as he went to go check on the construction efforts, do another pointless scan, and Overseer Crowley must have overheard because he showed up and followed him. They’ve been gone a long time, and I can’t hear construction sounds anymore. I went to see if they left, but Chuck said they never went through the front, and that’s the only entry. If the security chief doesn’t know where they are, who could?

I know you and Ralph talk a lot. Have you heard anything?

To. M. Haddock

Max, I don’t have any clue where Ralph is, but I saw the boss run by my station looking pleased with himself.

He went back the other way again not long after, carrying a book Ralph told me about, and next time I saw him he wasn’t looking pleased anymore. Told me not to visit the reactor.

Which is concerning, since I’ve been getting error messages all day. All I get when I try to run an analysis from her is garbage, though. A random assortment of symbols and letters.

To Max:

Max, something’s wrong. I can’t get back up the stairs, something’s blocking me. Did your stupid forcefield test finally work? Why would you put it on the stairs, you asshole?

The reactor’s returned to normal, but it experienced one of its scheduled breakdowns while I wasn’t able to contact it, and I don’t know how to fix it because they didn’t give me the script yet. Think you can get down here and give me a hand?

To Chuck

Chuck, if you’re getting this, you need to contact Vault-Tec. I don’t know what’s happening but people are vanishing, the Overseer is nowhere to be found, and I keep feeling the Vault shake. I went to check on Irene and the floor was gone. The floor was GONE Chuck. The Vault is collapsing into the tunnels below and I can’t get past the security office down here. There’s an… an invisible wall.

Don’t come down here, I don’t want you trapped too. Just get out of here and see if Vault-Tec will send a rescue party.

These men from Dunwich Borers freak me out. They always give me this fish-eyed look when I get close. I don’t care how cheap they are, I can’t wait until they’re gone.

Protectron 1 “Clanker”

Keeping a robot in just the right state of disrepair is a tricky one. The cracked dome provides issues of dust getting into all the moving parts, but it also looks wicked in the right light. All the loose parts to get the clanking sound right will require constant checking to make sure the hanging wires aren’t wearing thin. I’ll be honest, I don’t think this one will last long, but maybe when the real maintenance crew arrives they’ll be able to make it work.

Protectron 2 “Cyclops”

Stupid B-movie-looking ass. Whose idea was this? No one’s ever going to be afraid of this thing once they see it.

Protectron 3 “Cryptic”

Designed to run two simultaneous personalities, one the standard Protectron utility programming and the other allowed to be self-aware. This one operates out in the open and acts normally, but will make cryptic, creepy statements when only one person is within earshot, provided by the second personality, which will be too self-aware for a normal Protectron.

Assaultron 1 “Creeper”

Disarmed and provided boosted Stealth Boy tech. Will stalk random people and try to sit in their peripheral vision, turning invisible when they turn to get a better look. How the hell did we get an Assaultron? Don’t the military guard these jealously?

Mr. Handy/Mr. Gutsy “Jekyll/Hyde”

Disarmed, Hyde’s weapons replaced with non-lethal tasers. Using an extension of Cryptic’s 4ltern4ting 41 1t %3s#a!d$[ERROR]

>>[Experiment Logs]

I’m trapped in the role of maintenance worker until the Vault is further along and we can bring on the actual custodial staff, but since nothing is being used yet I’ve still had time to devote to my own personal studies. I’ve been attempting to improve upon the electrical shielding used in power armors to create a personal forcefield like out of science fiction.

I’m far from the first person to have this idea, but all force fields require massive power sources that make personal shielding impractical at best. My goal is to reduce the size of these generators while increasing power output.

My current model takes the form of a chest harness with the power source in a pack on the back, powered by two fusion cells. It works, but it’s very heavy and not as powerful as I’d like, barely able to deflect bullets at all. However, the energy weapons test was far more successful, with the magnetic field breaking up and scattering the plasma blasts almost completely while lasers refracted around it. I’ll need to look further into how the two interact.

As a side note, the magnetic field ruined my computer. I’m glad I thought to keep backup files here.

Cyclops is not as aggressive as the Vault psychologist would like. I keep telling her it’s not scary, and she says I’m not trying hard enough. Feh.

Cyclops was repurposed from a medical unit, and it must have been jailbroken at some point because its Do No Harm protocols are much stricter than normal. It simply isn’t able to get aggressive. She wants me to fix it.

I’ll get to it. Eventually.
