Text Behind Object with Outline in Front (Split Depth Title Effect) [Download]

Hey everyone!

Hope you are doing well. Sorry things have been a bit quiet the last couple weeks on the channel. I have been hard at work editing a short film which will be shown to a live audience along a live stage production, and I had to shoot and edit the whole thing in less than 10 days. It's been quite the whirlwind!

Here's a still from one of my favorite scenes I filmed.

The reason I say that is because, I have been very slow to reply to any messages, emails, or other forms of communications during this time, and I wanted to apologize for that. I will do my best to get back to all of you who have reached out! Thanks for your patience.

This week on the channel, I had an idea I have been wanting to try for quite a while. I have always loved when text is shown on the screen which is obscured by a subject. But then wherever that subject is obscuring the text, you see an outline of the text. It's really popular in a lot of commercial work. I thought it would be fun to make in Final Cut Pro! But while I was creating it, I realized how easy it would be to make a re-usable variation inside of Motion.

Of course, as always, I am uploading the finished product, along with some extra features for all of you to use in your videos!

To use this specific title, first duplicate your shot, one on top of the other. Use the magnetic mask (or draw mask/shape mask/ whatever you like) on the top-most clip. Then apply the Split-Depth Title onto the top-most clip, and you should see the effect work beautifully!

Watching the video will definitely give you a better idea of how to use this tool.
