Half in the Bag: Presence (And the Current State of Movie Theaters)

Half in the Bag: Presence (And the Current State of Movie Theaters)

Favorite ghost story since Ghost Story!! Thanks for the tip guys!!

Yngwie Tarantino

Just saw the movie and enjoyed it. I appreciate the real horror or just the fact there were no jump scares/clichés. Mike mentioned Ghost Story, has anyone seen Falcon Lake? That film is worth a watch and is like a coming of age ghost story.

Erin Gordish

Really wanted to see this at Music Box but ended up going to an AMC instead due to the showing schedule. Have always had good experiences with movie theater crowds here.

Fortunate Calf

Went to see this movie when my mother visited town and we were the only people there, too. Great experience.

Actually loved this movie myself -- and I saw it in a theater, where my friends and I were the only 3 people in there! The climactic moment was such a jarring, chilling payoff even having largely picked up on where the film was building to. Just a very competent story told very uniquely by a capable director.

Austin Pfundheller

Movies like 'Presence' make a good case against theatres. Seeing a movie like this on a streaming service at home is fine, but if I paid current ticket prices to see this in a theatre, I'd feel ripped off!

DonMac

for some reason the theater montage reminds me of Bowling for Columbine

Michael Falcone

The only way to save the MCU is if Mike and Jay replace Stan Lee cameos with fourth wall breaking complaints about movie goers.

Michael Matzat

FWIW I saw this in a theater here in Chicago. Maybe half full, was fine, no issues. Really enjoyed it - sometimes it’s a pleasure just to be in the hands of a filmmaker who knows what they’re doing and doesn’t fuck around. That’s the Soderbergh guarantee™! Also thanks for recommending King Tide, I really liked it. Nice understated movie for grown ups.

Tim Kocher

Holy shit, it wasn’t until Mike was talking about that I remembered I’d actually watched ‘Heart Eyes’

Dion Turner

I enjoyed this movie after your recommendation. at the end, I figured the mom and dad stuff was "adults dealing with big life things" viewed through the eyes of who the presence was

I usually go see a movie first thing in the morning during the week. Worst experience was when I went to see Megalopolis. First of all, it was Megalopolis. Second of all, the only other people in the theater were an elderly couple and they would not shut the fuck up. The man was on his phone watching videos during the movie. Then they left in the middle of it. Horrible experience all around.

Steven Soderbergh is such a legend. I acknowledge that he hasn't made movies that have engaged me on the level of Scorcese or [insert famous director here], but he can do anything and is constantly moving the form forward in real ways, visually and narratively. And I lied about him not engaging me on the highest level. The Knick is one of the greatest things ever!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I’m on Baker’s side with this one. Long live movie theaters. The guys hate people and how society is in a downward spiral, not theaters themselves. They don’t make that distinction, but after their umpteenth video on it, they really should make the connection. There’s also a lot of comments on the YouTube page about how this is a US theater problem. Out of the past ten movies I’ve seen in the theater, one was a bad experience. Two girls were talking the whole time during ‘Babygirl,’ and I was going to say something to them until one of them said “Nicole Kidman looks like Longlegs.” After that, I couldn’t stop laughing, so I allowed it.

Austin T

Nice! Can’t wait for Soderbergh’s next movie. Wait…whaaa?

You, Red Letter Media, awakened my interest in filmmaking, when The Phantom Menace Review blew up on YouTube, and I got aware of your channel. ✨

I'm really glad y'all brought up the extraneous subplot about the mom's shady business dealings. It's the one negative thing in the movie that lingered with me afterwords as I tried to figure out why it was in there. Also, I wish Patreon had a |spoilers] tag, because there's a ton to say about that finale, but I'd hate to ruin it.

I love going to the theatre, but it really depends on which theatre one is going to. I currently work at a larger cineplex theatre and it's usually better to go to the earlier showings to avoid the more annoying people (although I do feel like it might have to do with Germans not being the most obnoxious people, generally speaking). However, my city has a large variety of arthouse theatres ranging from very small to pretty large with several screens. My favourite one regularly shows older movies, classics, smaller recent movies, sometimes even great 35mm copies. It's one of my favourite places to be.

PunKat

Loved this double review of "Terrible people" and "Extras". It's just a shame for all that blabbering about that movie.

Bill Wilson

I love the movie theater, I go multiple times a week. I saw Presence in a perfectly quiet (sold out!) screen. And even so, I came out of this thinking the theater experience did absolutely nothing for this particular movie. Actually, a smaller screen would’ve made it more intimate, claustrophobic and creepier. So fully agree: TGE rating for Presence = 0 I’d consider super long movies like The Brutalist or something super slow like Memoria a TGE 10 : no fucking way am i sitting in front of my TV for 4 hours without getting distracted. The moment I go to the toilet or fridge, the movie’s lost me forever.

DOZENS! 💙

There are dozens of us.

Not me buying theater tickets just a few minutes before you posted this...

Speaking of adding Oscar categories for the ‘little people’: they need to have an award for best stunt person. It is ridiculous they do not. People literally die or get severe career-ending injuries all the time and we barely ever hear about it.

THE_GnomeChomskee

my comments are satirical usualy.. not use'ta actualy feeling ..Jay not wanting to make a movie caused a sudden frown.

Frazzled Doo

jay.. make another movie..or at least chip away at the idea..you might not feel the same way one day and it might be too late.

Frazzled Doo

I did see this in theaters and it was fairly nice. Mostly cuz almost no one was there. But the actual funny parts like with the dad asking for legal advice the audience politely laughed

Keanu

Did you just spoil "Heart Eyes" in the middle without warning...? Thanx a lot... :/

Manuel Johnen

😤A HAUNTING MENTIONED😤

Shan O’Blivion

Oh hell yeah! Great way to start the weekend

Dave Ruff

Another fine activation worth the price of my Patreon subscription. Fine composition on a very alluring thumbnail image that will surely attract a growing excited YouTube audience.

The Sean Baker Movie Theater speech intercut with movie theater shenanigans is *chef’s kiss* a masterwork.

Bill Lehecka

Just to comment on what Jay said about the kinda people who watch RLM videos, I’m both interested in films and the process of film making but also I’m very attracted to Jay Bauman (sorry I have to be honest) and like to hear his opinions on films and such.

Amanda Foster

Save the theatre!

Jordan Presley

Now comes that time where Mike & Jay share their thoughts.... pain & desperation spilled out onto the internet for our amusement! You're doing God's work, gentlemen!!
