Half in the Bag: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

After your Ghost Hunting post today. PLEASE IGNORE MY POST ABOVE! I am very satisfied now ha!!

Chauncey Frend

This is going to be super dumb. I'm going to love every second of it.

Marco Cabibbo

I shed a tear when "In loving memory of Bob" appeared on screen in the end.

Alex Dubrovsky

Is Jay punk'n all of us who said he needed a haircut last year? He literally did get a haircut: this skinhead cult member haircut.

DonMac

Omg the copy of little ghost I sent them is on the desk covering Mike’s script. I waited to go see the movie today to watch it. It only took me 15 mins of HIB to notice it and then I giggled and kicked my feet! EEEEE!

Allison PM

This was good! I was hoping Jay would have put Mike on the hot-seat to talk about his interests in ghosts again.

Chauncey Frend

I think it was disrespectful to the character.

I have been a huge fan of the original since I first watched it at nine years old. At first, I thought perhaps I was being too critical because I have such an emotional connection to the first one (and look at every little thing), but this sequel seriously sucked. It was a complicated, frustrating mess. Unnecessary characters, plots that went nowhere, repetitive and long, boring scenes, Lydia was a shell of her former self and her daughter was a selfish brat. I don't particularly like Ortega's acting though. I can go on and on... It was so disappointing. The only thing I did like was some of the effects. It feels like Burton has lost his touch completely, which doesn't surprise me, but I was hoping he'd go a little further for this one: it's a special one. But anyway, there's always the first one! ♥️

Bettlejuice....Heres what I think of Climate change....thrppt!

Erik Sheedlo

Oh no, I disagree. I like the Dune reboot greatly. I enjoyed all four of the recent Planet of the Apes movies. There is room for that, it just needs to have its own soul, its own character, in a good way.

Michael Matzat

I'm so relieved that I didn't imagine that movie and/or that I wasn't alone in enjoying it. Friends of mine who *watched it with me* refuse to acknowledge it or even say how they feel about it.

There are now a couple of established formulae for these things: 1.) The "straight" sequel (straightforwardly pick up where the last one left off) (i.e. the SW Sequels, Indiana Jones 4 and 5) 2.) The prequel 3.) Relatedly: The Lore Delve (try and explain the origins of such-and-such) (i.e. Prometheus) 4.) The actual reboot (Ghostbusters 2016) 5.) The soft reboot (gesture towards and acknowledge the existing canon) (Ghostbusters Frozen Empire) ...and the evidence so far seems to be that these ALL suck. No formula delivers actual quality. It's all shit. It could all be called a cash grab except that so often very little cash is generated. Claiming 'Hollywood is out of ideas' was a lazy criticism was clever until it was proven completely correct for the fifth, tenth, twentieth time.

I think it was planned as two movies (with this one ending on a cliffhanger), but WB got cold feet.

The Real Zam

The ending of every storyline was extremely abrupt. The ghost bf plot which was the arc for Rider / Ortega arc started great but fell flat. The ex-wife went nowhere. It was like Burton wanted to give Beetlejuice an actual arc, but changed his mind at the last minute. My theory is that Burton wanted to do two films. This one would resolve the ghost BF plot and end on a cliffhanger on the Beetlejuice Ex Wife story. In the 2nd film, she would be the big antagonist and Rider & Keaton would have to team up to defeat her. In the end, they wouldn't become friends but come to a sort of understanding. This would actually give Beetlejuice the chance to evolve into a sort of anti-hero and have some personal growth. I sense studio interference. I bet with the lackluster response to legacy sequels WB got cold feet. Given the performance of the film, I bet they are regretting their decision right now.

The Real Zam

They never resolved what happened to Beetlejuice's minions. As far as we know they are still roaming Winter River. I also loved how they were a shameless copy of the Minions with their yellow outfits, odd walking, and inability to speak in more than beeps. 'Bob' really stole the show.

The Real Zam

They really did EVERYTHING they could to avoid having Jeffrey Jones in the film. They could have just kept his character off screen like they did with Davis / Baldwin, but they went out of their way to have his character there but not the actor. I was shocked at how they handled it. I could taste the the hatred Burton has for the man. It was clearly personal and I wonder what must have gone on behind the scenes.

The Real Zam

I love Beetlejuice and have been living in fear of this sequel for years. Glad to say it didn’t disappoint- it could never be on par with the original, but I liked how chaotic and silly it was. And not too much cgi - phew!

Goldy Loxx

I'm still behind watching the good Tim Burton movies. I watched Ed Wood one or two years ago. That one is great! Enjoyed watching Ed Wood very much.

Marvin Falz

Somewhere between Star Wars episode 7 and Ghostbusters Afterlife all my interest in these „legacy sequels“ gently disappeared.

Michael Matzat

America always has had its weirdness around sex bad / violence okay.

Michael Matzat

I liked it

Tyree

Society is so fucked up and stupid that YouTube can have hour long montages of people falling to their deaths for Fail Army videos and be completely fine but if you say the word pedophile or sex offender when talking about an actual registered sex offender then you get demonetized. Fuck the world, fuck tech companies and their backwards rules, fuck everything.

Anthony V

A peaceful transfer of power (between crabby guys who discuss movies) is one of the essential features of our democracy.

Jeremy _

I watched the first Beetlejuice when I was 7 and I didn't get it at all (of course I didn't), but it grew on me over the years, even though I'm not the biggest fan of Tim Burton.

Marco Cabibbo

I have a hot take. I think it's better than the original. to be fair though I've always kind of been meh on the original itself while at the same time being a huge fan of Beetlejuice as a character. I wanted less about the Maitlands and their predicament and more of Beetlejuice tormenting yuppies as an agent of chaos and exploring more of the neitherworld and it's inhabitants and mechanics, which is kind of what we got in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

MeleeDuck

Is that like the "price of freedom" argument for accepting school shootings as a fact of life?

Christopher Nunn

We all miss Rich, but he's gone. Mike is a genius, but he can also be very a jealous and horny man. I accept this, you need to accept this, we all need to move on.

Damon Killian

I'm seein' double: four Beetlejuices!

Jeremy _

Yes but somehow...he came back.

Jeremy _

It seems in Mike’s anger…. He killed Rich

Christian Reiswig

Oh thank god, I didn't want to watch the fucking presidential debate.

Amanda B.

Oh boy, a horror-comedy sequel double feature: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and the 2nd US Presidental debate. 😂 😭 💀

neuracnu

We need to know that Rich Evans is still alive and unharmed.

Christopher Nunn

Fortunately this is only video of two old men rambling that I'll be watching tonight

Lucas M

There's that MST3K crack, "It's not so much a movie as it is a movie loaf. It's made from real movie parts, chunked and formed."

Jeremy _

The reason there is so many sub plots is because they are trying to TikTok the movie by jamming pseudo-shortform content together into feature length films

fiend394

I started telling my wife what I remember about seeing Beetlejuice as a kid. How it starred Fred Savage and had a blue demon guy and how in one part the demon guy stuck an entire cake into his jacket and lots of other details. Wife helpfully explained that what I recall as Beetlejuice was in fact Little Monsters (1989) and I have never actually seen Beetlejuice.

Jeremy _

My 5 year old daughter loved it! I thought it was ok. I’m still riding the high of Deadpool and Wolverine.

Amanda Foster

So not BOTW 🤣
