2023 Catch-Up

It's that time of year again. The time where we strain to remember anything about any of the movies we've watched this year. 2023 Catch-Up episode of Half in the Bag coming soon! It'll most likely be 2 parts? I think?

Comments

Just popping in to say I love RLM and will sell you guys the rights to my book for a chance to meet Rich Evans. I will then sue.

Joe Blackhurst

I hope you review the Creator. It was not perfect, but used innovative techniques using $5000 cameras from Best Buy, but in gorgeous locations and somehow still top notch CGI on an $80 million budget. 4/5 for me and first original Sci-Fi I have seen in theaters for years. Nobody was in my theatre when I saw it, which was weird, but apparently broke even! Oh wait Mike hated rogue one never mind…

Paladin

One way out!

Paladin

Ruh roh

whos a big winner

It’s so true. I’ve said it on here before, but it’s everything that Mike likes. Adults making a plan to get out of a situation.

Banta

Oh, it’ll be The Barbie Awakens with a 55 year old Margot Robbie complaining to Old and Ugly Betty about how she hasn’t worked in two decades. It’ll make a billion dollars, which will be worth about $8.32 thanks to inflation. It will be the biggest movie of the year in theaters, which are housed in the back of 7/11s

Banta

If Actar wants to review Barbie...they will review Barbie. If Actar wants The Batman...they will make it so. Actar commands, we follow.

troutki

I look forward to the Barbie reboot.

Cory Pedigo

Finally I can see all the movies I didn't watch and probably never will.

Cory Pedigo

Yes. There is no other, starker contrast I can think of than to compare the brightness and fun of D&D to the utterly dark, slimy cynicism of the three-part Hobbit movies. The Hobbit movies shouted "We hate you, audiences." The D&D movie told us pretty clearly that it loved us.

Jeremy _

Hate those guys who tell you that you have to watch Andor. Also... you have to watch Andor.

L. J.

At least it was a good movie. I'd watch it again.

Silentphil9

Yes, at best D&D is going to be a break-even proposition and we won't get a sequel. But compared to Indiana Jones 5/Flash/Elemental/Marvels/Black Adam/Blue Beatle (and maybe Napoleon) and its a gem of cinema

Jeremy _

I’m sure they’ve been on Twitter at some point this year.

Banta

And D&D was a flop itself because for some reason they thought spending 150 million on a D&D movie was a prudent financial decision. You’re right though, what’s happened since then makes the D&D movie look like Titanic.

Banta

I hope one of you two saw Barbie because I feel out on an island thinking it was actually pretty bad. I’m not a hater, I went in thinking I’d like it, but it’s a mess. Looks good, the musical number near the end is fun, but the structure is completely screwed. The plot ends halfway through the movie! And the dialogue at times made my skin crawl. But aside from myself and my wife, I don’t know of anyone that doesn’t think it’s great.

Banta

Fuck you, it's Ja- Hooray it's nearly December!

RY9UY

Wait… Films came out in 2023?

Shane & Sam Skinner

Wait, didn't they already make a Batman movie?

Jeremy _

A great year, when Disney/Marvel and DC's lunches were just absolutely gobbled by Barbie, Oppenheimer, Mario, and Dungeons and Dragons.

Jeremy _

Really fucking sick of people who won't shut up about Killers of the Flower Moon (for the historical events in it, that is). I READ BOOKS ABOUT THIS 25 YEARS AGO. THIS IS NOT NEWLY DISCOVERED INFORMATION. It's like encountering those stoners who once read Howard Zinn and now are Little Mr. History Professor.

Jeremy _

Agreed on the Holdovers, I think it was very similar to Red Rocket in terms of nuance/subtlety in characters and not beating the viewer over the head with any commentary, figure they will like it for similar reasons

Jayden Y

Any interest in revisiting Beau Is Afraid in this video? Even if Jay just gave his passing thoughts, I’d still appreciate hearing RLM’s perspective. Personally, it’s my favorite movie since The Lighthouse.

Christian Reiswig

Needs more Grief Clowns

gopher00000 whatever

Put part 1 of 2 in the title, but never release a part 2.

The Real Zam

I hope this is a children’s suicide video.

The Real Zam

Saw X I hope?

Symbols

Yes please

Syd Beretta

that's my favorite part! The catch-ups, that is. I think this was not a particularly good year for movies though. Maybe the best I've seen was Past Lives.

Peter Varga

Throw them out the window, start again

Patrick Brennan

Yeah, it was crazy that Tom Cruise action man went to space in that franchise.

Michael Parker

Same. This was gonna be my video to do dishes to. How am I gonna do the dishes now???

Aaron Nemoyten

I'd be more interested in Jay's review of Thankskilling. The Thanksgiving themed zombie turkey slasher. Extra internet points if he managed to get Mike and Rich to watch.

AllGoodNamesRGone

Praise Hell, Satan!

Lionel Mandrake

Oh I forgot that came out this year! That was a fun one

Rhea

Oh God I've watched like no new movies this year so I'm looking forward to what you guys are gonna cover. Asteroid City hopefully? I saw that one.

Rhea

I am neither an Eli Roth fan, however just the fact that he finally made a slasher based on his Fake Trailer from grindhouse after all these years is interesting to me

Syd Beretta

Just read the email headline and thought it was already out, I'm going to kill myself

Patrick Brennan

Will you be covering The Batman?

Justin Fiocca

Great! I can add lots of films to my list

Abbe Fenna

"Dead Reckoning Part 1, Asteroid City" what a movie that was

Martin

What happened to that?

DonMac

I don't think they're Eli Roth fans based on what they said about him in the Cabin Fever Re:view.

Isaac Diaz

I hope Jay had had a chance to watch Thanksgiving, I saw it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It may be the most competent thing that Eli Roth has ever directed, although I do have my issues with it.

Syd Beretta

I expect Mike to bring a folded piece of paper with notes and Jay to be there with a bottle of something to drink and giggle.

Andre K

Always looking forward to your recommendations.

Nada Leona Sheppard

Not gonna lie, that's where I take most of the actual recommendations. Just teasing enough, having enough distance with the hype (or lack thereof) and just letting it sit for a while really leaves the quintessence of a movie's qualities, I guess.

Bill Wilson

I remember the Barbie-monolith from some video about the Barbie movie. That was at least something memorable.

Marvin Falz

It balanced being aware of how ridiculous it was with also having some fun creative ideas. Way better than everyone was predicting!

FrogFood

For real. M3gan was a glorious masterpiece in all the wrong ways.

Kai Rinchen

If all else fails, the liquor remembers. RIP Mr. Lahey.

jason coward

M3GAN, The Killer, Talk To Me

FrogFood

Thank goodness, I can’t wait till you finally talk about The Batman.

Cruz Rivera

I will accept 10 parts if you have them lads

Joe Relihan

The movies I’d love to see them talk about but probably won’t: Beau is Afraid, Talk To Me, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Killer, The Holdovers, Thanksgiving, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, Asteroid City.

Michael Parker

Hoping to see a shoutout for the new Dungeons and Dragons movie! I mean, Hugh Grant is no Jeremy Irons but it was a lot of fun!

Jacob A. Wright

Hey guys, what happened to the Highlights channel?

Jazz Jackrabbit

Super excited to see you guys talk about all the disappointment/apathy you've experienced this year

Atom Baum

Let’s see which gems I’ve missed this past year!
