As I was contemplating this movie and Mandy, it made me think of Greek myths. There are two ways to force your way into the underworld: the Hercules way, where you just tie the Cerberus heads in a knot, and the Orpheus way, where your heartbreak is so profound and your song so sad that he just crawls into a corner and weeps. This movie was a cathartic experience. I loved it all the way through. When every moment grips you, one can never complain about the film being slow or its outlandish moments that it sets up to build this story.

I'm with Rich in that I just don't like sad movies but I enjoy thoughtful discussions about them. In particular I like that they touched on what I always find interesting: was it the actor who elevated the script or vice versa. I still won't see it but it's nice that Cage is still choosing to act rather than just showing up bc the rent's due.

God it was so refreshing to see this movie. Space Jam II: The Jammiest, and the new M. Night 90-minute Twilight Zone Episode were sandwiched in between this movie for me, and Pig really just made me remember what it’s like to be entranced by a really good movie that wasn’t trying to sell me something or pretend to confuse me..

Been a minute since I've disagreed with Mike and Jay, but I welcome it. It's probably for the best that these two found something released recently that they can both talk optimistically about. That being said, Pig is simply an okay film. I was enamored a bit at first by the film, because yes, it does subvert expectations, but what's there isn't enough to warrant this much praise (its cons are just as healthy as its pros and wtf moments).

Same; don't agree with our boys on this one. Also, I kinda do want to see Rich's take on this film. I think he would see past the pretensions of the film and at least comment on the uninspired plot -- i.e. you know, the stuff that happens in the third act that the writer came up with while watching Ratatouille.

So thanks to the kindness of another RLM fan on Reddit I got a link to the movie and watched it - what a wonderful movie, thoughtful, simple and at the same time you can feel the sadness and the love. Yes surprisingly good Nicholas Cage, but all the actors were brilliant. I think the script and acting lifted it. So thank you RLM for the review, bringing this movie to my attention, and to a fellow fan who helped to see it.

It was FRENCH TOAST Mike JESUS it was literally in the Part 2 title. I just got back from seeing it and I keep thinking how this is the kind of film I want to make. It's so simple and subtle in its story, acting, and visuals, while it explores the complexity of being human, of having empathy and giving a shit, of recognizing what matters and what's real, of understanding that love and grief manifest themselves in ways we don't expect and accepting that sometimes all we can control is our own response to what's in front of us. I also love that it never held the viewer's hand or felt the need to infodump. And YES, that restaurant scene was top tier. I think my favorites were the scene with the kid at Robin's old house, and the cooking scene with him and Alex Wolff. Something about Cage's softness in those scenes was really lovely. Good movie, worth leaving the house for.

Cage seems to go the "Brando" route, where his mid-life work is riddled with moronic weirdness, but it's all capped with Oscar worthy performances. Thank you so much for the recommendation! PS' Looking forward to see Mike suffering through the David Lynch quiz.

I feel like I'm stuck too. More in a spatial sense, less in a mental and emotional sense. I don't think I have lost my pig which searches the truffles for me, it's more like there are almost no truffles to find here. And that has nothing to do with growing up, or being an adult, or something, because for example, when one doesn't care much for action scenes anymore, there are so many other movies out there, without any action scenes in them. I've recently watched a few scenes from Gorilla Interrupted, and I still love the youthful silliness and the energy of that movie, but what's more appealing to me is to see the changes between then and now. That's just who I am, I find humans interesting, and how they change, and somewhat stay the same. I think that's also why I love movies and stories in general. They're all about the experience of the human condition of the storyteller. That's the real mystery. Not the monolith. Can't come up with a mild joke to break through the seriousness of this post.
