Decklist Variations

While the core ratios of the Purple Luffy deck remain consistent across builds, there are a few key cards that can be adjusted based on personal preferences or specific matchups. As the meta evolves, so too should your deck, ensuring that Purple Luffy stays competitive against the top-tier threats.

Below is a sample decklist that has performed well at high-level events and provides a strong foundation for customization. This version recently secured a Top-8 finish at the Oceania 2024 Finals, and it remains highly recommended for players looking to succeed in the current meta.

Common Adjustments:

Turn Order's Impact on Success in the Meta

In the OP09 meta, Purple Luffy performs best when going first, as this allows you to establish tempo and gain an early advantage. While the deck still remains competitive going second, turn order plays a pivotal role in determining the outcome of many matchups.

The graph below illustrates Purple Luffy’s win rates across various matchups, showcasing how much the deck’s performance depends on whether it goes first or second. Winning the dice roll can provide the critical edge needed to succeed against many top-tier decks.

Playing the Deck: A Strategic Overview

In this section, we’ll discuss the ideal opening moves for Purple Luffy and provide insights into optimizing your playstyle for maximum effectiveness. Understanding how turn order impacts your strategy is key to success, so let’s break down the opening plays, mulligan priorities, and key strategies to set you up for a win.

First or Second: Maximizing Your Advantage

Going first is the optimal choice for Purple Luffy, allowing you to establish an early lead by curving into impactful plays like ST-18 Luffytarou. Starting first puts immediate pressure on your opponent and sets the tone for the rest of the game.

Mulligan Guidelines: Key Priorities

When mulliganing, prioritize finding searchers and/or ST-18 Luffytarou, as these are critical to building a strong foundation. Starting with these cards ensures that you can ramp effectively and deploy your threats on curve, helping you maintain consistent tempo and board presence.

Early Game: Building Momentum

In the early game, your goal is to establish a strong board presence and ramp towards key power turns. Look for early enablers like searchers and ST-18 Luffytarou, which set up your mid-game strategy. Don’t hesitate to utilize your leader’s ability early on to gain the Don ramp advantage and keep pressure on your opponent.

Mid to Late Game: Sustained Pressure and Control

As the game moves into the mid and late stages, your focus shifts to sustaining board presence and leveraging your tempo. Use blockers to protect your key attackers while maintaining pressure on your opponent’s life. The win condition revolves around leveraging your wide board of impactful characters and forcing your opponent into tough decisions. Timing your swings and using your high-cost characters effectively will eventually secure the win.

Example Curve (Going First):

Turn 1: Play a searcher (e.g., Law) to dig for key pieces like Luffytarou, 5-cost Sanji, or 4-cost Zoro.

Turn 2: Attack with the leader > Activate leader ability and deploy a 4-cost.

Turn 3: Attack with leader and character, ramp to 7 Don with leader ability and play Luffytarou + Zoro/Sanji.

Turn 4: Focus on deploying another Luffytarou + Zoro/Sanji.  If this is not an option, you can look to deploy a 7C Sanji.

Turn 5: Depending on the game state, look to deploy a 9-cost Linlin or 9-cost Luffy. Consider keeping a don available for Gum-Gum Giant.

Turn 6+: Focus on protecting your board/life with event cards and blockers.  Look to deploy any combinations of 7-cost Luffytarou, 7C Sanji or additional 9-costs

Example Curve (Going Second):

Turn 1: Searcher(s)

Turn 2: Deploy 4-cost.  Preferably Bon-Clay to ramp into 5 don without taking a life from the leader ability.

Turn 3: Deploy Luffytarou + Zoro/Sanji

Turn 4+: Look to deploy any combinations of 7-cost Luffytarou, 7-cost Sanji or additional 9-costs
