After episode 5 the plotline starts to form and it is VERY compelling and interesting. There are actually 4 seasons now and 3 movie specials, and the movie specials are canon and important to the storyline. The story is based off of a 16th century Chinese legend called Journey To The West which Dragon Ball was inspired by.
