The Bezels of Wisdom - Ibn 'Arabi's Controversial Masterpiece

As most of you will know, we did a poll here recently where you got to choose what the next video should be. And you voted for a deep dive into Ibn 'Arabi's "Fusus al-Hikam".

That video is now finished and will be coming out this weekend. But I thought I would give you guys early access to the video.

Thank you all so much for participating in the poll. I've been wanting to make an episode on this topic, but it always felt really big and difficult. Your encouragement really inspired me to get to it though, and I think it turned out pretty well. Let me know what you think!

Thought about 27 chapters of Fusus al-Hikam instead of 28: 27 is 3 cubed. Cubed mean volume. Fusus is a volume or a container or a bezel holding these three, (1) the transcendent, (2) the immanent, and (3) the human being that bridges them. This, could correspond to (1) the transcendent father, (2) his human son, and (3) the knowable holy ghost. For a contemporary take, this aligns with Meher Baba's descriptions of the unknowable Beyond Beyond God, the Beyond God knowable through his names, and the perfect human being. 27 being a perfect cube could represent the Kaaba.

Thank you so much! I am glad to have you as a patron, and that my work has been beneficial! I know that there are very good educators in the Arab Muslim world, too, but I feel honored to contribute to religious literacy.

This was pretty interesting. This and the Brethren of Purity one got me to join. Are you familiar with the Yesod 'Olam of Esquira Abraham (not the other two of same name) or the Pseudo-Empedocles corpus? I've been looking into them, but both are very obscure and I think I will need to learn French, Hebrew and Arabic to understand them.

I've been considering becoming a patron for quite some time now. This video was my tipping point, I just finished it and came straight to here. I almost never spend money online, I joined patreon just to support you and your work, and this will probably be my only membership on patreon (if not ever, then at least for the foreseeable future). Thank you very much for all your work. I'm an Iraqi Muslim and your videos did more to strengthen my faith and expand my understanding of religion than everybody I've read, listened to, or talked to, in Iraq (or the rest of the Arab world for that matter) combined. While that does reflect poorly on the state of the Arab Muslim world, that I would learn so much about my own religion in English from a Swede (no offence of course) rather than in my own language and the language of the Quran and of most of these philosophers, from my own people. I am however eternally grateful to you and extremely happy that I found your channel. You are a beacon of wisdom in very dark and ignorant times. Thank you.

Thank you so much, amazing work as usual :)

Wild speculation here, but... As for the "missing" 28th chapter, maybe there is a symbolism to that. Maybe you are supposed to see an empty space and wonder about the missing chapter? Implying, for example, that it contains secrets to profound to be put into words, or something along those lines?

One hour and a half... Of Ibn Arabi. And here Filip drops this absolute treat. Ibn Arabi might just be my favorite philosopher of the western tradition. In this context, I am tempted to call it providence. :)

This was brilliant. So much in this episode- will to go back to it again. And again! Thank you. 🙏🏼

Mohamed Khaki

Thank you, I'm very glad to hear that!

This video has been incredibly interesting and in-depth. Thank you for the hard work and effort put into creating such informative content!
