Dear Patreon #3

Gimme an N! (ENN!) What’s that spell? PATREON!

Hello everybody,

I’m quite enjoying the routine of sending these out each week so here’s another newsletter-adjacent post from me.

Things I have been enjoying lately

Feeling Well by All Get Out  - I really like All Get Out, they’re like if Manchester Orchestra started listening to a lot of Pup. The new album snuck up on me and this is a standout track, but the whole thing’s worth a go if you get on with this one.

Nesting Season by Brian David Gilbert - BDG is phenomenal on any day of the week, but this video in particular has taken over quite a large part of my brain. This YouTube comment sells it better than I possibly could: At this point we need a playlist of "BDG songs about a minor issue that are actually a metaphor for how anxiety traps us in a prison of our own making but also still about the first thing."

Writing has always been something I’ve loved but for years I lacked the confidence in my own abilities to really give it a go (which, fair - I’ve seen some of the stuff I wrote in my teens and early 20s and let’s just say I was developing a personal style.) I finally feel like I’ve got a handle on it now and, at the time of writing, the thing I’m working on is approaching 30 thousand words. It’s really cathartic. Notice I’m still calling it ‘the thing I’m working on’ though because I’m scared if I give it a name I’ll curse myself and never finish it. Novel - I’m trying to write a novel. There, I said it.

The more observant among you have probably deduced by now that I’m feeling quite a bit better at the moment! The last two or three weeks have been, for various reasons, absolutely horrible. Thankfully I feel like I’ve turned a bit of a corner after a restorative weekend and taking yesterday off to work on my mental health instead of streaming really, really helped. It’s a relief, to be honest. Anyway, on to the usual questions

How’s Watson?

You may remember we were waiting on some test results after a lump on her leg got biopsied. The results came back inconclusive - they weren’t able to get a big enough sample to determine whether the mass is malignant or not. In one way it’s good news because it underlines just how small this thing really is, though obviously not having a definitive result either way is a bit stressful. I’m waiting on a call from the vet to discuss next steps and frankly I think we’re going to ask them to remove the lump just to be sure. Watson in herself is doing well though - she ran around with a truly enormous stick yesterday and then spent the whole evening farting.

How’s Blood Bowl?

Just so good - and frankly the reason I managed to turn a corner this weekend. I hosted a couple of people at my place while they played their league match and while I was still quite miserable, cooking them lunch and following along with what turned out to be an incredible match made me feel much more human again. The league really is one of my favourite things.

How’s work?

Not bad! I’m enjoying Ghost of Tsushima so much more than I expected, the storytelling is fantastic. I’m looking forward to streaming on Thursday having missed the painting stream (again) yesterday. Unfortunately we had to postpone filming the final two episodes of The Secret Project so we might start putting them out later than I expected, but we should be able to get them in the bag soon.

Right, that’s about it from me - I need to film Press Any Chiodini.

Have a nice week!

Glad you are doing well. Although it seems there is some stress in your life. These updates are very nice.

What Johnny says: I need to film PAC. What Johnny means: I wanna play Tsushima!

I only recently found BDG and I can wholeheartedly agree on that genre description. How does he keep doing it??

As someone who also loves writing, I'll admit that I have never finished a single novel that I've started. It's was originally because I would have an idea and then shortly after something would be released that was too similar and I felt people would just think I was copying it. Then I reached a point where I felt no one would want to read anything I've written, but after I returned to college to pursue a different degree I took Creative Writing classes and saw that there was some interest. After a while, I realized that I'm not writing for other people. Yeah I'd love to have someone read something I've written and enjoy it, but that's not why I do it. So, keep at it.

Just on the Watson situation, we went through the same thing with our dog a couple of years back. A suspicious lump, an inconclusive biopsy, ending up with removal as a precaution. It was a pretty minor op in the end, he didn’t have to stay overnight, and other than a couple of weeks wearing The Cone Of Shame he was right as rain after. It is overwhelmingly likely that will be the outcome with Watson too.

It is so good to read these updates. Happy to hear that it's on an upward swing for you atm. Also keep fingers crossed everything stays alright with Watson. Don't have a good day. Have a GREAT day!

"Watson... ran around with a truly enormous stick... then spent the whole evening farting" Well, that sounds fun... that's my plans for this evening settled!!!

I'm 100% taking the lump size being too small to test as a win, and a testimony to how on the ball you and your partner are with it.
