Dear Patreon (hello it's kind of like a newsletter)

Hello everyone,

I was thinking recently that my Patreon feed could be a little busier, seeing as it is mostly given over to posts about Press Any Chiodini / tweaks to existing tiers. It got me thinking about my friend’s newsletter which is partly about their work as a published author but mostly about the things they’ve been enjoying recently. It’s a fun read and I thought something similar might go down well with my patrons - let me know what you think and we can do one of these every so often.

Things I have been enjoying lately

The latest season of Too Many Spirits from Watcher. If you’re not familiar with it, two dudes sit down and drink cocktails while reading and rating ghost stories written by their viewers. They film all four episodes of each season in one night so by the end they’re pretty hammered. It is always a giggle but the latest season was absolutely phenomenal

The new single from Meursault. Meursault is one of my favourite bands of all time and the latest single has left me with very high hopes for the upcoming album. If you like downbeat Scottish music then you are in for a TREAT

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson is quite an intense read at points but it is also one of the best things I’ve read in ages. The author is a member of the Haisla and Heiltsuk First Nations - as is the protagonist of the novel - and it’s really satisfying to see how that sense of identity informs the supernatural mystery. I actually finished this one a while ago but at the moment I’m reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and it’s kind of just… fine? It could be half as long and honestly I wouldn’t have any complaints. I’m tempted to sack it off but I’m nearly halfway through and it feels like a waste to keep going. I dunno. I’ll keep you posted on that one

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which I’m playing because of course I am. I’ll be honest I had absolutely zero excitement for this game (despite my love of Zelda) but decided to give it a whirl and actually I’m very grateful to have gone in with zero hype - I’m having a lovely time but I don’t feel any pressure to be doing the most exciting thing at any given moment, or to explore every inch of Hyrule. I’m sort of just mainlining the story for now and that’s quite nice.

This Tik Tok, for fairly obvious reasons

Other bits

How’s Watson?

She’s fine, thanks! She’s finally built up the muscle she lost while she was sick last year and she’s having a lot of fun splashing about in the water to keep cool while we’re on walks. We’ve got a stray cat staying with us at the moment while we feed her up and get her seen by a vet and Watson is being very good about giving her space. More news on the stray to follow, I’m sure - I’m pretty confident we can find her a forever home, she is very sweet.

How’s Blood Bowl?

Good! I don’t mean to brag but at the moment I’m top of the league. I’ve got a game to finish up tomorrow and I’m currently 1-0 at half time but I’m hoping to at least equalise.

How’s work?

Not half bad! It’s been a busy couple of months and I am a little tired but I’m also really enjoying what I do at the moment. Work on The Secret Project continues apace and I am confident you’ll be seeing the first episode next month. Watch this space.

Right, that’ll do for now - let me know how you’re getting on in the comments. Have a nice day!

What a great idea! It's always a good thing to share what you're enjoying, we all don't do it enough. Speaking personally, I love a bit of downbeat Scottish music (Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad are both GOATs in my opinion) so I'll check out Meursault!

Johnny this is wonderful, thank you. I think it would be great to have more updates like this as a regular feature, especially if it helps you feel like this is a more filled out space. I appreciate your content either way - it brings happiness to so many, myself included.

Lovely to have a catch-up read! As an Australian fan who can very rarely join the livestreams and can't always watch later, it's great to be able to get a bunch of updates in a few minutes. Glad to hear you're enjoying TOTK, I was much like you, saw a couple of Oxtra/EG's preview videos and was less than enthused with the new powers, but I can mostly ignore them and just explore as I did in BOTW, so it's a lot of fun. Personally, I'm currently job hunting after moving back to Aus from the US. Slow going, but I have some interviews this week, so hopefully something comes good soon!

As a former librarian and child of booksellers, life's too short to finish books you're not enjoying. To the DNF pile with it!

Lovely, I was a little worried it was going to be bad news as you've been so tired lately! You asked how we're doing at the end, I've had a weird month. Became self employed (I still blame you). Upon saying "no I don't want to be in an open relationship" after a month of not knowing I was the 3rd person in one, I suddenly found myself with a spare ticket to Amigo in London - yours if you want it as no one else I know likes Amigo and you got me in to them. I recently went through the same always tired feeling and found out it was long COVID reacting badly with my Asthma. Might be worth getting checked out at your GP if the feeling doesn't go away in case it's mental health/medical, that's enough lecturing from me now though.

I have grown fond of little updates like this from people I follow on "all the things" - sometimes it is nice to just sit and read rather than worried I've missed a post here or not caught up on a video there. ;) Also, life's too short to read a book you're not enjoying...unless you want to be informed enough to talk about how much you didn't enjoy it, I'd say let it go and find something better! I only suffer through things now so I can complain about them knowing I read/watched the whole thing haha.

Morning Johnny, I know what you mean about Strange and Norrell, I started reading it because the developers of Nightingale mentioned it was one of the inspirations for the game. I got about 30% of the way through and found myself wondering when (if!) it would get interesting - in the end it was feeling like a chore to read, and I decided to stop and read something else for a while. Haven't gone back to it yet....

This was a lovely update and will make a great edition to the Patreon feed! Will have to check out Meursault. And have been considering reading Strange & Norrell for a while but maybe I'll leave it for a bit haha! Hope to see more of these sort of updates in the future ❤️

Lillith Hickling

More of this kind of thing, please, Johhny!

Charlie Robinson

This format is lovely! And Shane and Ryan are hysterical, their banter is absolutely the best. Though I'm glad I'm not the one responsible for getting them back on track!

What a delightful update! Thanks for sharing with us, it was nice to get some insight, and know that things are going alright.

dourlynome

This was nice, I know we tend to hear a lot of this on the streams but sometimes it's just a nice change to read it all. Plus am sure there are some people who don't get to watch every stream and would love to know all this. All the best to Johnny. 👍🏻👍🏻

Wings of Eternia

Love this! I have a tendency to get stuck on things (I’m that person who just listens to the same five songs for months on end) so I’m always looking for recommendations to help me find new stuff. And I love hearing about things that people are genuinely enjoying even if it’s not necessarily something I’m into myself. People being enthusiastic about things makes me happy. So this is just lovely! 💜

Cuppa Teafling

Love this idea, lovely to hear what you've been enjoying and very glad to hear Watson is doing well. :) Would very much like to see more of these in the future and will definitely be checking out too many spirits!

Elliot Bedwell-Mintz

I love this so much. This is such a great idea. I'm listening to Meursault right now and they're really cool! And Monkey Beach also sounds really good.

Victoria Hainsworth

This was lovely, I thoroughly enjoyed this 🥰 Adding the books and music to my check out list

Victorina

Never heard of Meursault, but they sound great. I'll have to check them out.
