The same dynamic of interpreting the lack of a manipulative pretense with a lack of virtue or substance seems to be mirrored in your place in The Discourse. And imo this way of seeing things is basically what it means to be a pharisee. How can you even talk to such people? They take any sincere appeal to be your own, typically inferior, manipulative pretense that's directed against them. And setting aside their abuse of others, it's got to be such an empty and small existence thats devoid of love or appreciation of anything substantive like ludushka in The Golovlyov family. Maybe there's nothing you can say to them but it's so sad that this defect that can be so simply explained and the awareness of it can stop what is basically a catastrophic tragedy for them and everyone they intereact with, yet none of this can be communicated to them.
