Steve Reads – Episode 2: Steve Will Fight You Over Shakespeare

Steve reads sonnets from Shakespeare and breaks them down the way he did for his ninth graders.

STEVE READS is a Patreon-exclusive series from DeepNerd Media. People have said for over a year now that they’d listen to Steve Shell, narrator of Old Gods of Appalachia, read the phonebook, cereal boxes, or whatever other mundane text he could lay hands on. Welp. Here you go, Family.

Steve Reads – Episode 2: Steve Will Fight You Over Shakespeare

I know it's been years since this was released, but I think this is my favorite episode so far of anything outside the story itself. Thank you teach!

I always hated the things we were forced to read. Until I was made to read Shakespere in 7th grade. And I just thought it was so beautiful and real. Also, damn, why couldn't I have had you as my English teacher? Might have paid a bit more attention (says the math/science inclined student)

The number of ways and places Steve will fight a body to defend Billie S is awesome.

Shakespeare was one of my favorites to study in high school english. Guess its part of why I'm drawn to Bards so much

Worth joining patreon to hear Shakespeare described as 48 possums in a trenchcoat

You are reading this with conviction like the preacher from my childhood church in Alabama.

I honestly cannot express how much joy this post brought me. I am certain I would have loved to have been a student of yours Mr Shell, I have always enjoyed Shakespeare and my bachelor's degree in English literature with a concentration of British lit from Shakespeare to the victorians was vindicated and validated by listening to this post in particular, as I really enjoyed hearing you break down Mr Bill's sonnets. Some of the best illusionatory writing in the English language in my opinion and it is gratifying to know someone who agrees! Please please can we have more sir?

I'm so glad someone else loves Shakespeare! Please read from Macbeth! I'm an 8th grade ELA teacher and I miss being in high school, where I had the pleasure of teaching my favorite play and sonnets. I've taught this one, too ;)

Indeed. Looking forward to more.

More Shakespeare please. Amazing.

Cynthia Parker

That sounds awesome!

Next time you do something like this I’d love it if you could include the “it is a tale told by an idiot” monologue from Macbeth? It’s my favourite

There’s a great reading of sonnet 116 on YouTube in a reconstructed Shakespearean accent. Proved and loved both have a sound kind of like the oo in book. It makes sense if you imagine Sean Bean saying it!

I pray that Your absence from school teaching is filled severalfold by those you have inspired to such levels of passion and erudition... We're grateful you're living the dream now, but those are serious shoes to fill!

That first sonnet you read is my dad's favorite poem in the world. He taught it to me when I was very small, and I still remember it to this day. If I ever love someone I'm going to recite it for them.
