Early drop - How China sold [a lot of] AK47's to America as๐Ÿ’ฐ "startup capital" [Podcast Ep. 5]

So you're China in the 1980's trying to dig yourself out of poverty. Your industry isn't diverse, are largely agricultural and you just took a hit fighting the Vietnamese. How do you get out of poverty?

The answer: Guns. Sell them to the American market.

in the 1980's China made a lot of AK47 style rifles (Type 56 Assault) and sold them to the U.S. market.

These gave the Type 56 a reputation of the best rifles, while they were considered the worst in other places of the world.

So what is the truth? Where are they from? Which factory made them? How were they made?

We speak with arms dealer Dave P. who's family distributed Chinese small arms in the 1980's for an answer to all these questions!

not better in europe. would love a garand but midlevel ar prices. can remember a garand was 550DM end 80s. svd40s were about 250maybe 400 just recent years. now... mas36s got damn pricy. mausers are still cheap but pretty much just those. handguns can be very very dirtcheap but tricky to get many in the same divisions in particular.

M1a polytec/norinco , FEG high powers for killer prices, Star from Italy had couple full lines of pistol , tangfolio copy of CZ 75 . Mauddi AK's, FEG blond AK's. Surplus SVD40's, FN 49, Hakim. FAL Brittish parts kits. Israeli FAL Heavy barrel parts kits. All seen cheap now but $4.25 was minimum wage!

remember some from adds as the ar clone, the m1a. the sig 226s (in 7,62tok!!!) 1911s and cz75s is still available in germany. less than 300 new. 800 or so for a 1911 in 45 with 9 and 22lr kit. half or way way less of the originals. 1911 is next on my bucket list but man... norinco? new and dirtcheap. yeah. or a used old springfield or colt?...

I ordered 20 cases of 20 SKS a week for more than a year in late 92 & 1993. At least 2 orders like that a month ( when they were available) in 94. & all the mac90's I could get my hands on @ a store in North Austin , Texas. wholesale like that SKS'S WERE $21-$24 EACH. WE SOLD THEM FOR $49 & went to $79 after Brady bill/ back ground checks went into effect because the price went up to us.
