Hand/Patreon update time!

As I write this I am sitting in a nice hotel in USA. We took a trip with the wife to meet her family. United States is a weird place, but that's neither here nor there.

My hand is doing better. Since the last post I've started a new physical therapy regimen and it's been paying off. I am pretty sure that most of my issues with drawing can be fixed with exercise and changing my work habits. While I still need to take it easy, maybe forever; it means that I can draw at least part time. But there will have to be changes in the future.

In the last couple of months I have come to terms with the fact that I won't be able to do long form storytelling in comic format anymore. It's just too taxing. At the pace that I can draw now, a project like Alfie is just not feasible. Which is painful for me, because that's exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have so many ideas that I wanted to realize as comics, pornographic or otherwise. I will work hard to get my hand back to working shape, but I will always have to be mindful of my limits.

Finishing Alfie is still my priority, don't worry about that. But afterwards, I am sticking to illustrations and really short comics for a while. Maybe forever. It's been rather disheartening to realize your physical limits. I am thirty five, and I am learning what it means to get older. Take care of your body kids. You're not getting another one.

I had to admit to myself that I am never going to draw all these comics I wanted to draw. Which was painful, because I spent the last twenty years telling myself that I am about to start. I'll just finish this or that project and I'll jump right into writing/drawing that SFW idea I've had. It's gonna be great! Admitting that it's not going to happen took me over a year. Letting go of a dream is an awful feeling. It's been rather depressing... For a couple of days, before I started writing my comic ideas in a novel format!

Turns out that writing prose is fun. Did you know that you can just describe what is happening instead of drawing it? Crazy stuff! I am fifty thousand words into a first draft of a web-novel, and I am having a blast. I think that even if my hand was magically cured overnight I would still prefer to write out my SFW stories instead of drawing them. Who the fuck wants to spend three to six hours drawing a comic page, when I can get a whole chapter written in that much time? I can get waaaay more story out this way. I love it!

Right now, my plans for the future look like this: Rehab my hand as much as I can, then split my attention 50/50 between writing SFW stories, and drawing NSFW ones. While writing is still a bit taxing on my hands it's nowhere near as bad as drawing; this way I can squeeze out a full day's work of creativity out of my mangled body, without hurting myself.

I'll let you guys know more about the webnovel once I have something to show. Those who used to frequent my streams a long time ago may know about it. It's the one about the lady in the supermarket. How's that for a tease?

Last couple of months have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but I am pretty happy about where I am right now. I can draw, and I can write. I may not be able to combine them in the way I thought I would be able to, but it's still pretty cool.

I hope you are having a good one. I'll be back from my trip in early april, and I will focus my energy on finishing Alfie. After that? Who knows? But at least I am 100% certain that I have a future in drawing, and that's enough for me right now.

Oh and as to the United States being weird, well, we DO try to be the great American Melting Pot. Which means, we try to blend cultures of others who come here to live, with the overall culture. And THAT as you can guess, gets kinda weird at times... Especially when American (US) English, tends to steal words, phrases, etc, from other nations and cultures, if it's not nailed down...

JasonAW3

There IS the possibility, should you feel like it, to add selected images to the novel, to frame the characters and actions, in a way that would allow you to fully immerse the reader into your stories.

JasonAW3

Good luck with US 🤣, it is indeed an interesting country. Glad to hear that you got a nice regiment for your hand ✋ and that you are doing better ❤️. We appreciate any master piece that you are able to bring out, but your health comes first! It is always worth the wait ❤️❤️❤️.

Dez

Yes we can be a bit weird for visitors to our country, but then again most countries probably seem weird to folks visiting who are not familiar to that country. But that being said, welcome to the US glad you could make time to visit us. I hope we're not to weird for you to fully enjoy your visit. As for the drawing, I am glad to hear that your hand is getting better and you are improving with physical therapy, and that you have found an outlet with the novel. Perhaps you can write some of the novel with a keyboard and use your uninjured hand, and maybe do some drawing with it as well to give your other hand a rest and still get some drawing done. That's how I taught myself to write with my left hand, I am right handed but I always thought, what if something happens to my right hand how will I write my name? So I practiced until I could sign my name at least. As for the comics and Alfie, yes, take your time to heal properly and then do what you can and what you are comfortable do at the pace that does not put your hand at risk. We will always be here eagerly awaiting what you do how ever long it takes you to do it, because we would rather wait than not have your artwork at all because you pushed to hard. So what if it takes days or weeks to do the next page of Alfie while you are rehabilitating or writing the next novel page, you have the rest of your life to create and share what is in your mind with the world and if it takes time to do it then the world can just wait a while. We've been with you this long and we're not going anywhere any time soon. We are as invested in Alfie as you are so we want to see the end too. And we look forward to reading the novel and seeing the short comics as well, you make really good short comics and stories. I personally have been following you since I first found your artwork, I think it's been about 10 years now give or take, I'm getting old, 66, so I don't pay attention like I should anymore. ;-) Anyway, we love your work and we love you too, so take care of yourself so we can enjoy your artwork for many more years to come, and please never stop drawing, it would be a sad day indeed if you had to. Love ya man, take care of yourself.

Robert B.

Hello and welcome to the States. Yes, we can be a weird place at times but I do hope that you enjoy your visit here. Best wishes for strength and resilience in your healing process. I've loved your work for approximately 15 years. Thank you for brightening the world with your creative output.

Leonardis Magnus

Thanks for all the creative output that you've given us, I read Alfie for the story and that's why I keep coming back twice a week! I really enjoy your writing :)

Scottie Wottie

As someone who has pretty much loved everything you have ever created, I just want you to know your creativity and persistence are inspirational. The world is better thanks to the content you create :)

Joao Luiz

Getting a few trusted ppl to be test readers too. To get feedback from a reader’s perspective before putting the novel out for the public

Saijito

Short version: Less ink, more life. See Renoir's Portrait de Madame Bergerat, with proper lighting.

asaoka

Yet don't stop writing. I say that as someone who is 150 pages into a novel that will never be finished, because I will never run out of things to say and do in my fictional world.

asaoka

And in the years where you focused on 1-page drawings, you brought dozens, hundreds, of characters to life.

asaoka

I have seen sketch studies from your early years where you bring 5 faces drawn side-by-side to life all at one time.

asaoka

asaoka

If you’re looking for a platform to post your stories, I would suggest royalty road!

Ben Morrison

Thanks for not giving up entirely... and also being true and honest to yourself and your limitations! I love and admire your work, aside from it being some of the best romance comic out there (and yes, that's what I call it instead of just porn or smut). Your work is ART. I'm really grateful to have been a part of it :) More nun/witch romance! wooo x)

SpecialSpoon

Welcome to the US. Hope you have a great time. Glad to hear your hand is improving.

Mike R Pen

This is a hard time you’re going through. I’m so sorry. I’m glad you’ll still be able to do what you love, even if it’s not exactly how you envisioned it❤️ thanks for the content

Antonio Pool

Can’t wait to see whatever you do next, I’m on board for it!

neet-oh

Wait, Incase was the person commissioning all that "blonde lady buying wonderbread" porn? In all seriousness, take care of yourself. We'll love you in any medium

Erin

Welcome, good luck, I hope you have fun. I advise you to investigate the strange and challenging world of collaborating. (Not with me, I'm not trying to promote a job for myself.) But while it would be a process much different from what you are accustomed to, it could allow you to create works that are closer to what you can do alone with your physical limitations. Try not thinking of these changes as letting go of a dream. It's dreaming at a different level. And welcome to the world of writing. It can be extremely satisfying and terribly maddening. Sometimes simultaneously. Don't go to Alabama or Florida.

Grendel's Stepmother

What you’re going through is one hell of ride, but it’s amazing to hear that you’ve picked up writing! I look forward to reading everything you create. Your works have been inspiring, sexy, fun, and beautiful. I know what you create next will knock my socks off just as your previous projects. Have a nice vacation and good luck with that physical therapy.

BufftatJunkie

Yeah, this.

Wade Glover

Hey there, depending on how much you bring in (merch [an Alfie plush would be cute], Patreon, millionaire benefactors, etc.) have you considered hiring a second artist to help you? That's what every long-form creator has had to do I believe (hence why we have studios).

Wade Glover

Anyone know or have his stream link? I want to follow it. Thanks!

Shawn K. Younkin

Commercial success and quality of the art are often not correlated. Tar was a grandiose movie and flopped. Anything new with the words "Star Wars", "Harry Potter" or "Marvel" on it -is successful, but 90% of them are slop with high production values. Selling drugs is very profitable, but probably not great on any other metric. How much money it makes is a terrible metric for everything, but especially art. I highly recommend reading half the first book of 50 Shades for educational purpose of how boring a book can be. That's 400 pages of bad prose.

Kdansky

I work with my hands in a very detail oriented field, but I also have a joint disorder which will slowly destroy my fine motor function. I know how you feel, but its good to make use of what you have while you can. The illustrations you've done thus far are genuinely historical in their quality, and you've made your mark. No matter where you go, what you do, or where life takes you, you've done some amazing stuff.

Coy Naugle

So happy to hear from you!! Like everyone says, be safe in the states. Shits fucked. I am glad to hear that the news on the hand hasn't disheartened you away from expressing your creativity! I, for one, am excited to see what you put out next! SFW or otherwise!

PBreezy

Kind of uh… taking your life into your hands by coming here huh? If I didn’t already live here there’s nothing in the world that could make me travel to the US…

Unreliable_Narrator

Ok u been in America 🇺🇸

Miy Eterp

Im not sure how to properly respond. But Im sorry your body is limiting what you want to do. That sucks so much. I hope you take all the time you need to recover as best you can! At the same time Im glad to hear you've found another passion that can ease the physical strain. Having more passions is great regardless however. Variety is a good spice in life! I hope you enjoy your writing very much :D

Shadefalcon

Stay safe in the US it is fucked up here.

pj wolf

It's hard to let go of art you feel. I'm sure that was hard. Take care of yourself. Hope you get out of here (America) in one piece. It's crazy here right now.

Aaron Crabtree

Do what you need to do. We're cheering for you. A miracle might still happen, but even if it doesn't, that's still fine because you've already come so far ♥️.

Alex Kaplan

Hope you get better

Presley Mercer

As an artist as well i know how much it hurts knowing you can't do what you've always wanted. I do think that taking care of yourself is very important and i'm glad you're getting better and found the right balance to things. one suggestion I have in terms of long form story telling is, would you consider hiring an artist to do the art for a comic if you're writing it? If that's not an option you want to entertain that's more than understandable, you should always do what is best for you. hope the best for you and that you have the right creative outlets you need. cheers

David Burrola

I'm so happy you have found a way forward and I wish you a quick recovery! I look forward to seeing your web novel. While reading your post, I was struck that I completely believe you can convey the same imagery with your writing that you do with your art. I also admit to being a bit impatient to read it!

VanDiagram

I would assume that he has so many ideas and time is limited resource. And if you don't use your time it only gets wasted and there is no way to get that time back. As I personally get older I also see how fast time flies and what feels like recent memory actually happened decade ago.

25shadow25

Would that we had all the time in the world. And yeah things sure are “weird” over here >.> Regardless, I’m glad you’re getting story out! Follow those dreams, even as they transform

Magitechnician

Good luck with the hand. You seem to be talking a healthy and thoughtful approach to the future, which is great.

J Corkey Custer

I came into the comments to mention just this, I know of several writers with arthritis issues who use voice recognition software to assist with the strain !

Mell mell

I'm happy to hear that you're recovering. I hope you have a peaceful time in the US. I also hope you don't lose your dream of drawing long-form comics entirely. Even with your medical constraints, I think it's an admirable thing to do, and I hope you at least consider continuing it in the future. Regardless, I've been following your content for the past decade now, and I hope you continue to draw and write whatever makes you happy - as I will be more than happy to enjoy it.

Call Me ET

Hard argument to make considering that both Twilight and 50 shades are best selling books. ::Edit:: But I do get your point.

Shawn K. Younkin

Man, I remember the first time I realized that completing a comic takes me a few years each and that I'm going to need to start seriously considering which ideas to pursue, because life is short and I won't be able to just draw every single one. I can imagine that cutting that time with an injury was quite a shock - so I'm super glad you found love in writing and that you're taking steps to get better. Also I was a bit shocked to find I'm older than you- I somehow remember loving your art when I was in high school, but now I think it would've been impossible? :P

Totem Pole

The one thing you absolutely need to do if you want to publish novels or even just short stories is to find an editor. When you compare a text that's gotten an editing pass or two with one that hasn't, the difference is night and day. That's Twilight vs Dracula. 50 Shades of Grey vs The Reader (Der Leser). Basically average video game level writing versus published novel.

Kdansky

You'll always be one talented artist, and one that has been an inspiration for me. So thank you, and cheers to whatever you do next. ♥️

Jackie Gibson

Do what you need to for your health! I'm glad you've found a balance to work with for now! I hope it helps :)

Dani Jones

As someone who's only a year or two older. I know the feel. Don't have the energy that 20 or 18 year old me used to have.

Nicholas Feltner

I grew up in a time where european comic book volumes were years apart, why is pace so important to you?

Shelby

There is something to be said for combining your writing with drawing. You may not be able to do long form in comics, but the artwork and writing could come together to create a deeper narrative. The ability to not only write a story but provide the audience your vision with art work could be beginning of a whole new level of storytelling for you. Once I hit my 40's my eyesight told me to fuck off, after having beyond perfect vision. Unfortunately this is just happens. I am glad to hear that you are making progress on your hand's recovery. Focus on that and let everything else just fall in to place.

Oraxsis

Hey there. That’s a lot to deal with. Much love and support.

Matt Hope

I hope you feel better. I strongly recommend looking into voice recognition software -- Dragon Naturally Speaking is a more expensive one, but there might be decent free stuff too. An artist friend who hurt their hand was able to use it, and that would reduce the hand impact further as you can dictate the novel at least part of the time.

AIX99

Super happy to hear that your hand is doing better and that you've found a balance between health and work. Not sure if the interest is there but you should check out visual novels I've always found them to have a good balance between writing and art and I'm pretty sure if you made one it would go over very well. You're an inspiration and consummate artist. Thanks for ten years of short stacks.

Boxxen

I'd reccomend posting on Royal Road my favorite website, but your story may be a little more mature than they allow sadly :(

Ford-Thomas Frank Loveland

take it slow mate, no rush in life :) as much as we want to see the comic finale your health, psychological and physical, comes first. Even if it 20 or 10 or 2 pages of Alfie a year people will still be happy to see you are ok and thriving. The novelization of your stories sounds great.

The BearKnight

Damn, sorry to hear about your hand and coming to terms with your limitations. I never knew you streamed, what is your stream link?

Shawn K. Younkin

Happy to hear it!

Tredecian

We're here for you. Sometimes life forces you to take detours in your creative methods. I know you will bring your beloved verve to whatever you choose, and we will be here waiting for the result. Be strong, I believe in you.

shedemon

Take it easy my man. Do what you NEED to do so you can do what you WANT to do. Best wishes.

Richard Fletcher

Thanks for the update. But please take it slow with Alfie. Please don't rush yourself

Winter Zapel-Ewy

35? I thought you were in your late 40s or older. This makes me even sadder

MisfitRogue

I could see your style working really well with a sortof lightnovel approach, prose interspersed with illustrations. From what we've seen you do both pretty excellently :]

astralFitz

I am so happy to hear your hand is better, but so sorry to hear you have to give up on some of your dreams, it hurts a lot to do that. However, as someone else mentioned, you can combine your prose with illustration and I'm sure that would work really well too! Here's to even more recovery in the near future, and sustained good health in the far one!

SiberianHussy

Sorry to hear about your struggles, and I'm also thankful you will persevere to bring Alfie to the close it deserves after so long. Idk... maybe with time, and a steadier pace you might be able to do a long comic maybe? A page a week and then breaks in between chapters. But maybe that is also not feasible. As someone who enjoys your short comics too, I'm here for as long as you're able. But I also can't imagine how tough it is to be limited on what you've spent your life working towards, what you adore doing and seeing that become painful. Appreciate you and what you've brought us. May the future be bright for you both. Hope the weird political climate in the US doesn't stop you both having an enjoyful trip

Quadrant

Man, between you and Sejic, it feels like everyone I that know of doing great adult long-form comics is having to cut back, if not drop comics entirely. That said, an Invitation novel would be 🔥🔥🔥

Misty F.

Glad to hear you're taking care of yourself and finding out how to work things out. Just wanted to put it out there that if it's really important for some of your ideas to turn into comics, you can always collaborate with other artists. It's not the same I know, but doing it alone by yourself doesn't have to be the only option for you to follow through with what you wanted. I love your ideas and will keep following you as a fan, comics or writing.

Puri

I followed your art since almost a decade, you have been a great inspiration for me art wise, I am glad to see that your spirit is to be admired as well, I look forward to your art. Have a good one pal.

Carlos Elías Pineda León

Thanks for the update! It's good to hear you are feeling better! Have a nice time in the weird big country! And if your hands are feeling bad while writing, you could try a program to just talk and it writes for you. You would just have to spell-check. Also a novel with your drawings every few pages would be great too!

Katharina Heinrich

As a fellow creator also in my 30s, your words hit heavy. I am sorry you can't do your plans exactly as you wanted to, but I'm super happy to hear you are confident in still having a future in art. I'm looking forward to reading your SFW stuff, and continue reading the NSFW ones too. No matter the topic or form, I'm sure I will enjoy whatever you put out there, like I always do. Best of luck with the recovery!

Madamka

As a person who spent most of their adult life using their hands and body to make a living, I fully understand how incredibly difficult and disheartening it is to lose that access. It's also a really long mental process because even though the muscle memory is there, the muscles aren't or the cartilage, so it's something you have to re-realize over and over again. But we are creative and we will always find ways to express that creativity within our limitations. An illustrated novel sounds amazing!

Rae Esterlina

One of the most difficult things about physical therapy is consistently doing it. It's easy to stop once you get "better" only for things to relapse because you aren't maintaining it. Also, safe travels. Things are really crazy right now.

phosphor112

Finding that work life balance is important, even more so if one is taking a toll on the other. Do what you want as much as you can, but take care of yourself. We love the work you do and look forward to whatever you produce. As for getting more drawings done, have you ever thought if taking on a protege?

Spanky

Take care, be well 💜

Leonardo Taglialegne

Given how imaginitive you are, writing prose or art wise I shall continue to watch your career with great interest.

Aethus

As a resident of the United States: yeah. It's super weird. Glad yo hear you're doing a bit better.

That Urchin Girl

Glad to hear you're doing all right. I hope you enjoy your time here; lots of the people here are kind and don't agree with what the government is doing.
