4.4 Strength of mind
Full of guilt too that Seur was being
submitted to such torture on his
behalf. Wanting like crazy for Seur
to drop the stone. He should not
suffer like this for him. He would
willingly take the whip if only Seur
saw sense. Willing him, too, to drop
the boulder and smash Assawin’s
head with it. That would be worth
this effort.
But Seur did nothing. He said
nothing. He just stared straight
ahead. As if any distraction would
weaken his resolve. As if he could
draw strength for this effort out of
the air. As if the gods were giving
him this strength of mind.
“Do you not see…?” Assawin was
stood right behind Seur.
Anxiously Graisingh noticed how
Seur’s arms were trembling.
Struggling with the effort. He could
see the fear written in the man’s face,
the fear that this time the rock would
go. For himself, he would be content
if Seur had to give in to this ordeal.
He had done enough, he had done
more than any man could expect. But
he was anxious for this loyal servant.
That was the last thing Seur would
have wanted for himself. Graisingh
was in conflict. But he respected the
challenge Seur had set himself. But it
was inhumane. Even if Graisingh
himself was more than gratified at
the efforts the man had made.
