Movie Theaters

Tell me about your favorite movie theater you like to go to, and why.

Syndicated in Brooklyn is my ideal date/hang out spot. It’s a bar that also serves as a second-run theater and they also do a lot of retrospective screenings! Cinema Arts Centre on Long Island is my favorite theater as a whole. Indie/arthouse films, retrospective screenings, and Q and A’s/talks. What more could you want?

A reading cinemas by me is my main theater. They play lots of special events . Saw 2 batman movies this past Saturday. Bonnie and Clyde on Monday, last night a Christopher reeve documentary. Lol. Plus tons of others .

I was just about to comment this. I go to the Belcourt all the time.

Now this is going to be between Cinemark at the mall, The Grand, and Studio Movie Grill! Each have there catering pros but from a film watching experience The Grand stands out to me because I saw the Dark Knight on a excellent sized screen!

One of the many things I miss about Chicago. On weekends they’d have a live organist playing to silent movies. Really amazing place to see a movie, even if the chairs aren’t the most comfortable. Yes, I believe that was the first review I saw of yours. Not sure how long ago that was.

My favorite in my town is The Texas Theater built in 1931. It's very artsy-bohemian and very much wants to give the vibe of a David Lynch film when you walk around inside. It's often for the film lovers and cinefiles. Lots of cool screenings of old films that are often rare to find. It's also where Lee Harvey Oswalt went immediately after shooting JFK, and was arrested inside.

sounds up my alley

Galaxy My local one has the best seats, popcorn and an IMAX (only one in my area). Additionally outside of playing mainstream releases they are always trying to add more choices for the independent/arthouse crowd. Additionally they have a regular lineup for Anime, Family movies, UFC events, concerts/musical performances, and Flashback Cinema (exclusively old classics from the past). I've personally really enjoyed the Flashback Cinema option getting a chance to see certain movies in a theater that I never thought I'd get to. For instance, earlier this year I randomly saw they were showing Dial M For Murder and couldn't pass up the opportunity. I also really love seeing movies in their IMAX which they only added a very a few years ago, especially this past Monday where I got to see an early showing of Megalopolis featuring a panel of Coppola, De Niro, and Spike Lee beforehand. They're pretty much the only theater I go to at this point unless a certain indy movie is only available elsewhere.

haha yes. The Substance had a bigger reaction in my theater than I've seen in years. What a small theater. But...those are usually my favorite kinds. They always have so much history and are often a lot more unique. Looks great. Sounds like an amazing volunteer opportunity. I volunteered recently at The Texas Theater in my hometown, which is also my favorite.

Music Box is very well known domestically for sure. That's awesome you were able to see it there. I've been wanting to revisit the film. My review for it is initially what connected us right?

just looked it up. It's beautiful!

Kentucky Theatre in Lexington, KY. One of the few “movie palaces” left in the U.S. I’ve had a ton of great experiences there, especially their Q&A events, I’ve seen Michael Shannon and Steve Zahn on numerous occasions. They also show classics during the summer and in 2013 I saw Singin in the Rain for the first time the restored print looked amazing.

I’m grew up in Oklahoma where we had the Warren. Looked like 1940s Hollywood. Has a balcony and they had table service dining up there. When I lived in Chicago, it was the Music Box. An actual theater from the late 20s. I got to see my grandpa’s movie, the magnificent Ambersons there. When I moved to LA, it was probably just one of the three AMCs in Burbank. I had A-list then and was at the movies 3 times a week. Now in New York, just my local regal. I have the regal unlimited plan and I’m constantly at the same theater. Nothing special about it, just there a lot.

Fyrisbiografen in Uppsala, Sweden. I volunteer as a projectionist there twice a month so I’m partial. One of my favourite memories was screening The Substance recently. I was watching from the booth a bit and there were a lot of laughs, gasps, and squirming in seats 🤣

The belcourt in Nashville. It’s 100 years old. Non-profit/cheaper (on tickets and concessions). Only cinephiles go there so no shitty crowds. They also do tons of curation (like showing all of copalla’s movies leading up to megalopolis for example). I’ve seen so many classics there that I probably would have never seen period if it weren’t for the amazing programming they do. BUT Only downside the seats suck and are uncomfortable lol..

It was AMC Fairlane in Dearborn which was part of a mall and was the only nearby theater which would play indie films. That's where I saw La La Land and Eighth Grade originally. Unfortunately, it closed permanently after the pandemic and I was upset when I learned that.

Wolfman Brandon

AMC. They show mainstream and arthouse alike. I just watched The Substance there yesterday and I’m so glad they showed it there.

The moment you watch something in that Lincoln Square iMAX screen, it's basically the only way you can see a blockbuster spectacle.

vince2k

Easily AMC Lincoln Square

When I'm in NYC I'd say Lincoln Square's AMC for anything in IMAX. But all the other screens there are pretty small. Regal in Battery Park is also pretty great and usually empty. Upstate on the other hand doesn't have as nice theaters except maybe the Regal Cinemas in Crossgates & Colonie Center. Malta has a pretty cool Drive-In theater that's a personal favorite if I'm interested in a double feature. Lastly some of the smaller chains like a Zurich or a Movieland tend to have okayish screen sizes but are fairly cheap with tickets and concessions which is what I'd prefer for movies I go in with low expectations like a Blumhouse movie or whatever Superhero movie is out.
